No, Chicago is not equal to LA.

And it appears very flawed even at that.
GaWC Research Bulletin 5

I count 19 alpha cities in Europe and just 2 in the US.
Just saying, it just does not make any sense to use this as "the bible" for ranking cities.

GaWC, IMHO, is a very bad way to compare cities, I also think there's a lot of biased viewpoints from the GaWC towards certain American cities.

41Latitude - The Most Important Cities in the United States (http://www.41latitude.com/post/400972984/most-important-cities-united-states - broken link)

This blog does a fairly good job of collecting all of the available data for the various city ranking studies over the last few years that resulted in this table (read the site for an explanation):

Any list that has Philadelphia 60 points behind Atlanta,Bos,Miam(no offense) should be crumpled up and tossed in the waste basket.

Stop with this GAWC nonsense(biased European collegiate research project) , and CSMA's that stretch hundreds of miles. Urban area has Philadlephia firmly entrenched at #4.

Philadlephia is the 4th most important region in the country for its past/recent history and its arsenal of cultural, educational, and professional treasures . Its been top 3 in USA metro population for 80% of this countrys lifespan, top 5 for 99.9% of the country's existence despite being half the geographical size of its peers- and having areas 20 miles away from the city limits of Philadlephia not being included in its metro.

Sorry guys but in reality this poll should be which metro is #5 in the usa. You would need to have an appreciation for the past to understand that Philadelphia is unequivocally in the top 4. Washington DC is merely a museum for the events that generated from Philadlephia.

LOL @ you. That is pretty misinformed. When people talk about the most important cities in the US, the three that are always mentioned are NYC, LA and Chicago. It is only natural that Washington DC is fourth on that list because of it's importance in government, culture and politics. You calling Washington DC a city of museums, is ignorant and pretty stupid to be frank, but I'm sure that that's the response you were looking for. It's okay to be a homer for your city, but please try to be an intelligent and objective homer, instead of an ignorant, brain-dead homer. Those people are the WORST.

If Philadelphia is in the top four. It is AT number 4 and it is not any higher than that. To disregard DC which has the 3rd largest downtown in office space in America, home to where the decisions are made, and a strong military and technology base shows that you are indeed being a homer, rainrock.

If you took the time to read that post you would see that it was the cumulative score of 7 internationally recognized think tanks and organizations, not just the GaWC. Philadelphia is an important American city, it's just not as important as you think it is.

Philly has the third largest downtown by population, and had it not been for philly there would be no D.C.

Maybe by population, but not by office space. Its day-time DT working population is behind cities like Chicago, Washington DC, San Francisco, and Boston (See Table 1).

Stop. Seriously Philly people: STOP. How about this, without Boston there would be no Philadelphia.

Philly is an amazing city. Highlight why you're important right now...saying "City X wouldn't be what it was today if it weren't for us!" makes you sound pathetic. Boston is one of the few cities in the country that can rival/equal Philadelphia's history...yet we don't resort to that argument. Your history may help your city be great in many ways like museums and beautiful neighborhoods, but you can't take credit for another city's success just because of your role in American history.
