And this ?

The number of households that have inflation-adjusted annual incomes of $100,000 or greater but are renters nearly doubled from 2006 to 2016, according to the Joint Center for Housing Studies of Harvard University.

Just for fun

Did you read the rest of the article? The last couple profiled was in Arizona, which is frequently touted as a great place to relocate. Their financial circumstances were appalling and they made terrible choices. The Seattle couple was the only one that was legitimately squeezed by their circumstances. The couple in WH isn't at all solid indicator of the economic climate in CT just an indicator of poor planning/judgment.

Between 2010 and 2018, Connecticut’s headcount dipped by a fraction of a percent, while remaining at approximately 3.57 million, according to U.S. Census Bureau data. Illinois and West Virginia were the only other states whose populations shrank in that time frame.
Even so, by the objective view our economy is definitely not “not very good”. Much of the so called “exodus” is related to retiring baby boomers moving to warmer climates. The overall drop in our population is statistically insignificant. A few hundred in a state of 3.57 million is hardly much. Jay

But it is a trend, and we are trailing other NE states according to the most recent data in economic and income growth . A I have mentioned before, CT is headed to an increase in the wealth and income gap. We are at or near the top now. I always said, if you have a decent income, CT is a wonderful place to live. However as time moves on, less and less will be able to experience that wonder.

The point of the article is that people like this are not alone. The environment has changed for young people starting out. Where are the signs it will get any better in CT ? If you read the article , doesn't the graphs and figures demonstrate that the WH couple are not unique at all ?

How much has the cost of a College Education gone up in 10 years ? What about the next ten. Are incomes rising as much? Are incomes in CT matching the increased levels of taxation and cost of living ?

Think about starting to save today for a new born child. 18 years from now, what will you be able to afford for higher education? How can you save more with all the increases and burdens placed upon you ?

Look, I went through it. Several children through College and into the work force, some with advanced degrees. Looking ahead 18 years if I had to do it again would be almost terrifying. Even if I was a younger parent than I am today.

Well...... I am a millennial, a long time CT resident, and a parent to young kids, so this is my reality.

At 28 I had a similar HHI and big debt... So I had no kids (yet) and a $160k mortgage, which is certainly still doable in greater Hartford, because the market isn't any better today than it was then.

Default FL targets CT big money companies

Interesting read on how FL is successfully recruiting big money from the Northeast, specifically Connecticut.

“Kelly Smallridge, president and CEO of Palm Beach County’s Business Development Board, told FOX Business that more than 70 financial services companies have moved into Palm Beach County within the last three years. Currently, the organization is working with another 15.

Around April 15, Miami real estate development firm Codina Partners launched its “Unhappy New Yorkers” campaign.

Armando Codina, executive chairman of Codina Partners, told FOX Business the firm also planned to launch similar campaigns targeting New Jersey and Connecticut.”

Thoughts?

Its a terrific strategy which will reap huge benefits for Florida.

States must stop viewing corps as hostages. Corps realize jobs are assets, and wisely insist on financial incentives from states in order to grant them access to those assets.

Competition is wonderful.

Actually most of this type of thing should be illegal.

Any 'deal' should be available to any company, regardless of size or connections. It should just be your state/local laws, equally applied.

Being able to pick winners and losers to build your political capital is textbook corruption and garbage and.... bad.

Like I said, I have been around. CT is getting tougher and tougher for the young middle class , the 65 % without College Degrees, and even those with them. CT is one of the top three states to lose people, yet, nothings wrong...keep moving...nothing to see. Well, the bright side might be some of my retired NYPD relatives can move here and get the security jobs that they now have in the gated communities in Florida.
I would not blame the CT economy for this couple's problems. This is a prime example of poor financial management. If you know you have large amount student loan debt then you need to live more frugally until you get your debt load in order. WH is an expensive town to live in but there are many less expensive ones nearby where they could have started in a small house or condo until they paid off their debt and saved money. Charging $50,000 in credit card debt is outrageous and is a disastrous decision.

It seems like the couple wanted to jump right into the lifestyle without moving through the stages of someone starting out and moving their way up. This is not a Connecticut economic problem. They have good jobs but lack financial management knowledge.
