Keep in mind you're comparing California (which is basically the entire northeast and mid-atlantic) to Connecticut (which is about the size of the LA metro area). Apples and oranges.

Now if you were to compare LA to CT, I'd say CT offers just as much and has a better quality of life. This coming from someone who has lived in both places and loves CA.

Quite frankly, this refrain is getting rather tired, especially since my parents in RI heat their home from Oct. 15-Apr. 30 and then cool their home from Jun. 15-Aug. 31 every year.

I got referred from her Pediatrician to a Urologist to another specialist at the Miami Children's Hospital. No one could diagnose what was ailing my baby. I kept having to take her out of school because the pain was so bad. All the Dr's thought she was either *faking* it, insinuated sexual abuse or made the circle around their ear that she was crazy! No one thought it was real. Well, fast forward to having gone through Hurricane Katrina and soon after, Wilma. I had had enough and packed up in Dec 2005, to head north, back to CT. When her Dr got back from vacation in Jan, I took her to see her in West Hartford and explained all we'd been through, she asked my daughter, now, 10, to describe it in her own words, she did. Within 10 minutes she had diagnosed her with a Hernia and immediately referred us to a specialist at Hartford Hospital's Children Medical Center! The diagnoses came back the exact same! There was never any question what it was! The operation was scheduled, performed and my child never felt better! She is now going on 19 and never had a problem since! Can you imagine how I felt as a mother, the 1 person who your child looks up to to make the hurt and pain go away and you're looking to the Dr.'s to know what to do, but haven't a clue?!? It was one of thee most devastatingly embarrassing times of my parenting life! A simple diagnosis and not 1 darn Dr down there knew what to do! Yes, I love S. Florida...and want to return but that one scary episode worries the heck out of me, if I got sick....
I have family with similar issues with poor medical care in Florida. One was not diagnosed for more than five years with Lyme. The doctors kept telling her they do not have it in Florida and refused to even test her since she had not left Florida for like 30 years. Finally after years of suffering she found a doctor to test her and it was positive. Another family member was misdiagnosed with breast cancer. She was too far along when it was discovered. And an elderly family member is having a horrible time finding decent medical care. All that said, Florida is a big state and does have some excellent hospitals including a Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville. Still I prefer Connecticut. Jay

Here's what I don't get--why is it always about FL in particular w/ New Englanders?

Almost everyone I know in RI and MA in addition to CT is always talking endlessly about FL, making it seem like it's the end-all, be-all. Friends and family in New England make it seem like I should be institutionalized for moving away from FL because, after all, who would do such a thing?

I think they're either so incredibly narrow-minded/little-traveled and/or just wish they still had a place to stay for free.

Doctors that graduated medical school with a C- are still doctors...in every state. My mother-in-law was misdiagnosed multiple time by multiple doctors at Hartford, Yale-New Haven, and a few private practices. They finally said "eff it" and booked themselves a doctor at the Mayo Clinic and took a week off work.

The person with the child who had a hernia had what most people would call " a dumb azz doctor". We have them here too, even in the infallible perfectly educated north east.

In a nutshell, I have had to bring my kids to the pedi for several visits, once 3x to diagnose a simple rash which I kept telling her what it was and she wouldn't listen to me. I've been to the ER once, had to bring my daughter to the dentist twice, and I'm pregnant so I've had many appointments for that.

Never had I experienced so many terrible doctors. It's either that or I have to drive an hour to find one.

I could go on and on.

And anyone who has had pizza from up north can't tell me when you want a pizza in FL you can find a good one...lol

It's all subjective and some are small things I miss but there are a lot of important points to. I will be very happy when my plane lands at BDL!!!

Well, I am a CT native, and very critical of CT, and I would still rather live in CT than California, purely due to the astronomical cost of living there. And honestly, I'm not a fan of the fact that CA is rapidly losing white population that is migrating to other states, as the state becomes more and more Spanish speaking by the day. If I were forced to move to CA, the only areas I would consider are Sacramento or the Inland Empire, because they are relatively affordable and have warmer summers, which I like. But again, CA is even MORE expensive than CT and the jobs pay LESS overall.

Florida, I would possibly consider moving to, because it's at least affordable, I'm very familiar with it and have family there. And I prefer the greenery over California's drab green / brown appearance.

As for New York, the only areas that I would be interested in living would be Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, etc., because they are affordable and more laid back, which I like. In fact, I would prefer these areas over CA or FL, during the summer at least. They are well established metro areas that sort of resemble the Hartford area and have beautiful scenery with the Great Lakes nearby, Niagra Falls and more.

I agree with this comment. Everyone acts like Florida is the ONLY other alternative to living outside of New England. Never mind the other 43 states. It's either New England or Florida. And most of them have never even visited anywhere else. The lamest part is that they continue to ONLY go on vacations to Florida over and over and over and over again. Fortunately, that's not my mentality. I enjoy going all over the country and have been to 37 states.
