Not in Clearwater.. Lots of Florida fans around here. Moving to quieter, less developed parts of Florida is even worse because they are rundown and residents are far less educated.

I see it more like Florida is more a fad pleasure like feeling good by getting wasted on a tequila instead of real natural life value. And it's magazine advertising of Disney cruises

Likewise. More likely you would see a "reasons why I enjoy fun outdoor activities more than getting intoxicated at a club every night" post

Than a

"Reasons I stopped doing outdoor activities and now just drink whiskey all the time" thread

But seriously there's some real biases you need to consider.

Anyone who lived a "working" life in New England and a "retiree" life in Florida is going to be comparing apples with oranges.
Working hard for a living in Place A
Vs Living out of a nest egg in Place B?

Regardless of what either had to offer, person will overstate their liking of Place B. Why? Because they associate as if Place B there's no working...

This is at least 1/3 of migrants to Florida. Even stronger tie to Florida when the person who moved down was widowed and the spouse died of an illness such as cancer or stroke. They don't want to look back

This also says nothing about Florida really being better

For another 1/3, it's allll and I mean ALLLL about the weather being too cold up north

So if you like the seasons and you aren't age 65, you can filter out about 2/3s of the polling results

Haha right on. CT is for the analytical, nature-loving types while FL is for party types and people who are tired of thinking a lot. Thats why its more for vacations.

But this just occurred to me now.

If you worked in Connecticut and then retired in Florida, you are really comparing working versus not working

You are also making a New England pension in a place where if you lived and worked, you wouldn't have such a high pension

These people have a bias you can't even go by. To them, Florida you don't actually work for a living.

Now if someone worked in Florida and then retired in Connecticut....well this happens much less often for 2 reasons:

1) Connecticut taxes will drive a person already situated in Florida to not make a move where a big chunk of their money will be taxed by the state in their year of retirement

2) Florida salaries are too low in most professions to use as nest egg for a Connecticut retirement

By that logic, CT would be the ideal place for me.

Florida is more for party types and clearcut more conservative. It is big business, pro-Bush family, for North Florida , the lower FM stations are almost 100% evangelist preachers. To the point every philosophical discussion is about spirituality all spirituality interchangeable with the "you believe in The Lord you go to heaven, or else eternal fire. If you are Liberal you are killing the unborn.

And then some anecdotal story ending with "and now let's all pray for her"..

I would agree with you and say that the panhandle is one of the most backwards areas of the entire U.S. that I have every been to, and I've been to 37 states. I witnessed blatant racism in public while at a Waffle House in the area.

I think panhandle is of course very different dynamic from South Florida but I do not like either one that much.

South Florida = overdeveloped sprawl and transient touristy, filled with the same looking shopping centers as you drive 45 minutes to get anywhere

North Florida is just that rightwing fundamentalist backwards-ness that prides itself on being less overdeveloped than south Florida, but given I had to locate in a Florida, the north part of the state gives me no choice but to prefer South Florida where I can at least breathe without shaking with fear a state trooper will pull me over and beat me to the ground because I'm not from around there.

It's gotten better but I have heard awful incidents. One was an undercooked chicken salad that an out of towner did not want to pay for because it tasted vile. A deputy sheriff came in and ordered the person finish every bite or be booked in county jail for contempt of defying police orders. The officer claimed to be protecting the merchant's "rightfully earned" profits

But Connecticut I prefer over any part of Florida.
