You should also check out Norwalk. Housing is limited in SoNo, especially for someone with a dog, but you could live in a more suburban section of Norwalk or East Norwalk and still have access to a downtown, with restaurants and culture, as well as train service to New York. Parts of East Norwalk are inexpensive, near the water, and within walking distance of the train station there.
Unfortunately Stamford never loses that crazy feel, so it might not be right for you.

I was going to suggest Bethel...but it seems like you want to be in the SE rather than the SW. I'm surprised to here you and some others state that Stamford has a hectic/busy feel to it b/c it has always felt quiet and slow to me when I've visited...but maybe that's just me. Do you feel like u must stay in CT...if not, why not White Plains or somewhere in Westchester county? Maybe Westport, CT would be up your alley?
