The site is not why it happened. No one here has said that. He was mentally ill or evil at his core in order to execute. What these posters on that site did do is egg him on, and that in itself is scary. Where is the humanity?

Chats can be traced, but people can simply erase their names cancel accounts and/or domains. There is even a the dark net for child exploitation that is different OP systems than Windows. There is places like backpage that is from Canada- one of the more evil sites that ever existed- I hope the CEOS fry one day in heavy oil.
The kids are savvy to media -and talk in code- leave us all behind- and will continue to do so, because you all want to keep cutting federal dollars over BS- with NO clue of what you are causing to go unchecked-

I'm not so sure it would help. As disgusting as they are, I think it's very difficult to prove anonymous comments resulted in a mass shooting. I was thinking "depraved indifference" but that's probably because I watch way too many crime dramas and they're usually exaggerated for entertainment purposes.

Maybe we need new laws, although some will argue they're too restrictive and violate our freedom. Since it's illegal for a 50 year old pervert to chat with a 12 year old girl about sex, we should be able to stop (or possibly punish) people who egg on a disturbed would-be killer.

Maybe its time to require registration and limits on the 1st.
There are NO absolute freedoms, including "speech" …

And, yes … If you stand up in a crowded theater and scream, "FIRE !!!" and a stampede results, with injuries and possibly deaths … yes, the authorities will try very hard to track you down and arrest you, charge and try you for a CRIME ...

Another shooting in a gun-free zone.

Imagine that.

Isn't encouraging somebody to commit a crime considered illegal?

Take a situation where somebody tells you, "I'm going to attack a school tomorrow," and you reply, "Do it, man, take plenty of ammo." And you don't notify anyone of potential harm.

Seems like you are facilitating the act.

A gun free zone means nothing if it's not enforced.
