I moved to Arvada less than one month ago on a short term lease. If there's one thing I've noticed about the Denver metro area, it lacks really bad areas. I've had a good look at Arvada, Westminster, Wheat Ridge, Thornton and Broomfield. The rest I've only passed through a few times. Aurora is an area that seems to have a bad reputation. I looked the city up and saw the population of Aurora is over 339,000. It's ranked #56 on the list of largest U.S. cities. The only part I've gone through is just east of the Cherry Creek area. So what is Aurora really like? Where are the bad areas? What parts of Aurora are nowhere near these bad areas? Is it a city one should try to avoid or is it a nice place to live? I'm interested in 2 bed, 2 bath townhomes with a garage and there seem to be plenty in Aurora.

Parts near Colfax should be avoided - mostly north Aurora. Parts South are fine.

Get in your "fine automobile" and drive to A-town.
Be sure to cover the ENTIRE city as it is huge.
Then, report back.

My fine automobile is a Harley Davidson and that's exactly what it is there for. What I was hoping for was a little advice on what parts to avoid.

If you want to see the hood all it would take is about 2 hours from door to door, just drive on 70 and get off at Peoria and go north. Welcome to Montbello. Then cruise through neighboring Commerce City before heading south towards 6th and head east to the other side of 225.

Just prepared to be underwhelmed, during the day you would never guess it was even a hood unless you run into the wrong characters. On a Harley though doubt that will happen.

Underwhelmed is a good thing. Every time I hear about bad sections in Aurora I figure to leave that area out on my list of places to live. I'm curious as to how bad it really is. My main concern would be about the good parts being too close to the bad to feel safe and secure. I'll make at least a couple of trips throughout that area to see what it's all about. As I said some of the apartments and homes look really nice in the photos.

Check out this video if you want to see the nice city I just moved away from. It also has some bad areas.

I would describe the "bad" area boundaries as follows:
East of Havana, West of Chambers, North of Mississippi

Once you get south of Mississippi, it becomes a very low-key, suburban city. Honestly, though, if you drove near the Anschutz complex (old Fitszimmons), down 6th Ave. East of Havana, Alameda, near the Aurora Mall, etc., you wouldn't really see it as a sketchy part of town. There is definitely more crime, but it's not like you're going to get shot at.

I've lived in Aurora for a little over a year. I live in the SE, east of Tower not far from the Aurora Movie Tavern just north of Centennial.

It is a perfectly nice suburban area - safe, quiet, lots of well-kept single-family homes.
The area east and just south of here is mostly newer, higher-cost homes (The Conservatory, Copper Leaf...).
The area west of here, going towards Parker, is a mix of single-family, condo and apartment complexes, all in very livable areas.
Same deal going north/north-west towards Alameda and Sable.
