Because it is such weak wood and prone to dropping limbs on top of cars.

Per Forestry Rules and Regulations, the following trees may not be planted in the public right-of-way:

 Any of the poplar (Populus) species including cottonwoods and aspens
 Any of the willow (Salix) species
 Boxelder (Acer negundo)
 Siberian elm (Ulmus pumila)
 Weeping and pendulous trees
 Multi-stemmed trees

Other trees which, for various reasons, currently have a moratorium on planting in the public right-of- way include:

 Ash (Fraxinus) species
 Walnut (Juglans) species
 Silver maple (Acer saccharinum)
 Autumn Blaze / Freeman maple (Acer x freemannii)
 Sunburst honeylocust (Gleditsia triacanthos inermis 'Sunburst')
 Bradford pear (Pyrus calleryana 'Bradford')
 Mulberry (Morus) species
 Russian-olive (Elaeagnus angustifolia)
 Tree-of-heaven (Ailanthus altissima)

Note these trees are only prohibited in the public right-of-way. You can put one in your back yard, or even front yard if it's not in the ROW.

If we had it to do over again, we'd probably plant something different, but they're nice big trees and provide a lot of shade both in the yard(s) and to the roof.

Wow, you had a geothermal heat pump installed? These systems are double the cost of a traditional central AC or heat pump set-up. However, in severe climates (very cold or very hot), they ate amazingly efficient. Where is your rental located, metro Denver?
