There is little point in discussing nuances with those who have so thoroughly botched the basics.

Do you think we can turn these good 'ole boys into doctors and physicists and computer scientists?

Most people these days who don't go to college are usually at the lower end of the intelligence/talent scale and educating them isn't going to solve that problem. One of the big reasons that employment is so much better among college students is because they tend to be a smarter and more talented demographic. It isn't because the *degree* made a significant difference. The vast majority of college grads work in jobs unrelated to their major: In 2010, only 62.1 percent of U.S. college graduates had a job that even required a college degree. And just 27.3 percent of college grads had a job that was related to their major at all.

There are 4 wammies that have hit the slow-skill demographic, especially men.

1) Outsourcing of labor intensive production
2) Illegal immigration
3) Persistent trade deficit caused by policy (we produce less than we consume)
4) Nearly all our productivity gains going to the top 0.1%

The first one isn't something we should change, but the last 3 are. It's only going to get worse as AI gets to be real.

Your premise from the start has been, politicians know best.

Fortunately, you had no credibility to lose.

LOL! All I've said about politicians is that they are in nearly all cases not the ones who negotiate international agreements. My premise from the start -- regularly buttressed since -- has been that various folks here have little to no clue at all as to what the heck they are talking about.

I think some can do better. Even the top 1/3rd of rural hs America kids go to college less often, especially the males.

Meth and moonshine is not going to employ all of them.

Their disdain has nothing to do with iq, and that attitude costs them dearly.

It has been the Democrats leading the opposition to the fast track trade agreement. The House just blocked it, with several Republicans supporting the Democratic position. It gave Obama quite a black eye, but maybe congress is starting to realize that rolling over for offshoring isn't doing the country any favors.
