McCain is doing better than any other Republican would have done. GWB tarnished the brand terribly. Of course, since the people who "wanted to have a beer with him" and elected him because of that won't take responsibility for what they did, they're just pinning it all on the GOP. Stupid.
For once, I agree with you. McCain was in truth the best choice the GOP had - for the simple reason that he held the greatest hope for appeal to the middle. Of course, it was STILL going to be a long shot for him - especially since the support of the Religious Right (among other sub-groups of the GOP) was very tentative (they NEVER liked McCain). The pick of Palin was meant to bring that group on board - which it largely did. In that respect it was actually a pretty good move. The problem is, it soon became apparent that Palin really was pretty ignorant about international issues and as a result, not a very well-rounded candidate - but rather one who really ONLY appealled to the Religious Right part of the GOP base - but NO ONE ELSE.
This probably COULD have been offset somewhat had McCain immediately switched his focus to trying to connect with the undecided voters in the middle, but instead he continued to cater to the Far Right (something that was really unneccessary since the pick of Palin brought them on board) - which did nothing but alienate those voters in the middle that he so badly needed.
So, along with starting out at a massive disadvantage because of the tarnished GOP brand, McCain began to destroy his own hopes with a negative campaign that was essentially mismanaged horribly. When that was matched against the brilliant campaign that Obama has run, what little chance McCain had was quickly gone.
All in all, VERY bad news for the GOP.

I have to wonder if McCain and Palin were chosen by the real (very big money) controllers of the GOP as sacrifices a year or more ago. The differences in campaign contributions would indicate something like this.
I hope that a real conservative old fashioned Republican Party, like the one led by Teddy Roosevelt, will emerge from this mess.
It just demostrates that McCain would never get anything done as president. He cant even work with people in his own party. How would he reach across to democrats? But the republicans are jumping off a sinking ship.
It's interesting and wierd to watch this. Republicans are famous for strength through unity. I think the truth is they were never that keen on McCain anyway, otherwise they'd be united to the very end.

Republicans were more united on their hatred against Dems. At that time, the fundies were not vocal, so it was not an issue - the Rep tent included many middle-of-the-road people. Over the last 6-8 yrs, fundies have gotten very vocal and it is costing them the center. A war within is likely. Frankly, I hope the party emerges stronger (hopefully with less fundamentalist bent and more fiscally-conservative intent). This will keep Dems on their toes & will be good for the country. Afterall, country first should be more than a slogan.
While the editorial page of The Wall Street Journal is conservative, the newspaper's news pages are liberal, even more liberal than The New York Times. The Drudge Report may have a right-wing reputation, but it leans left. Coverage by public television and radio is conservative compared to the rest of the mainstream media. Meanwhile, almost all major media outlets tilt to the left. These are just a few of the surprising findings from a UCLA-led study, which is believed to be the first successful attempt at objectively quantifying bias in a range of media outlets and ranking them accordingly.
