Who cares what Hispanic means in the US?
I mean, who cares?
I'm talking about 1000 years before!!!!
I mean, who the hell cares what Americans think?
Saying that Portuguese are not Hispanic amounts to Jerry Lewis talking about quantum physics!!!
The word Hispanic is mostly used in the US, and it does not include Brazilians and Portuguese people. Thats just the way it is. You can keep throwing temper tantrums, but it wont change anything.
If you call a Brazilian Hispanic they will correct you right away as they relate it to Spain/Spanish speakers.
Though for things like qualifying for Hispanic Scholarships, they should argue about fitting into the Hispanic category- I would.
there are many venezuelans or portuguese origin, they have links to portugal far more than many brazlians who have nothing to do with the portuguese
same goes with most mexicans, they have nothing to do with spain, they were COLONIZED by spain, doesn't mean they have links to spain, just like black american people have no links to the UK.
I know 2 Mexicans who are Portuguese descendents (have Portuguese las names from grandparents), and dozens who are of all types of European descent, even Czech.
People need to stop talking about places and people they have no clue about, seriously.

The word Hispanic, Hispanico, has been used since there was no America to include the ancient Hispania.
The word is used for cultured Americans with the same meaning it has in Spain, The Hispanic Society (also including Portugal).
Now, that recently "Hispanic" is used by illiterate politicians in the US for political reasons, who the hell cares? They also use that word "Anglo", which is the most ridiculous and ignorant thing there is....and other words that are just equally absurd.
That would be like saying that Renanians or Swabians were not Germanics because there were 10 million people in the US that called themselves Renanians&Swabians and were Polish Kosovars in origin. Who cares?

Purely anecdotal, I know, but I just got back from several weeks in Portugal. There were many Spanish tourists there, particularly in Porto. I made a point to ask a number of Portuguese what they thought of Spain or the Spanish and not one at all ever made negative comments about the Spanish. Some of them were quite complimentary.
