Contrary to wishful thinking, COVID is NOT over, Florida has a very high rate of community spread and we are heading into fall flu season.
Florida has the 5th lowest rate of infection in the US last week according to the CDC.

DeSantis is doing a GREAT job.

DeSantis is one of the best governors in the country. He isn't allowing businesses to be closed.

We've had enough of them have to shut down... It's been a total mess.

I know.

I feel bad for all of those businesses that are having to shut down because of this thing.

Default Canadian snowbirds to stay home

As noted in posts 248 and 251, many Canadian snowbirds will skip their U.S. winter vacations due to COVID-19 surges here and the risks of inadequate insurance coverage if hospitalization becomes necessary. As most Canadian snowbirds are more elderly, their concerns likely are magnified.

<<Health insurance hurdles are deterring retired Toronto accountant Mel Greenglass, who for almost a decade has spent four months in southwest Florida near Naples. Canadian snowbirds must buy a supplemental plan to their government-provided coverage for any emergencies during their stay. It would have been $2,800 for him and his girlfriend this season, up from $1,800 previously, and he feared they wouldn’t be covered if they caught the virus....

Snowbirds' plans have a huge impact on tourism. In Florida, 3.6 million Canadians visited last year, making up a quarter of its foreign tourists, according to the state tourism office. Visit Florida estimates that only 15,000 Canadians arrived between April and September, the last month with available statistics. That's about an 99% decrease from the same period last year.>>

Canada has travel restrictions....it has nothing to do with insurance

..anything identified as "symptoms" and they can be denied entry back into Canada
...if they are allowed back in...they have to quarantine for 14 days..and they have to submit a quarantine plan before they can get back in

"You must have a plan to quarantine for 14 days when you arrive in Canada, including

a place to stay
how you’ll
get to your destination
get your groceries
access essential services and medical care"

"The penalties for not following your quarantine plan once you’re in the country can include

a fine of up to $750,000
6 months of jail time
being found inadmissible, removed from Canada and banned from entering for 1 year"

Inaccurate statement to say that insurance cost and concerns have nothing to do with Canadian snowbirds wintering in Canada this season. Not only are Canadians facing a 55 percent increase in the cost of supplemental insurance, but they face the uncertainty that their supplemental insurance won't adequately cover the immense cost of hospitalization if they contract COVID-19, according to the article quoted in post 277.

For a Canadian with a residence in Canada, complying with the quarantine rules upon returning likely is a lesser concern as the issue wasn't even mentioned in the AP article republished by Bloomberg.

Likely a major concern is the higher risk of infection in American destinations than in Canada, according to the article.

<<This is the first winter in five years that Steve Monk and his wife, Linda, haven’t driven to Arizona from their home in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan.

They typically leave Canada to hunker down in warmer climates for six months. They could fly, skirting travel restrictions at the border, but they’d rather “freeze their buns off” than go to the U.S., where COVID-19 infections and deaths are surging.

“It’s not worth taking a chance. It’s not nearly as bad in this country as it is down there," said Monk, 69. "Pretty much every Canadian person we do know that goes down (to the U.S.) is not going. It’s pretty widespread.”>>
