I would think the least of the bunch would have to be West Virginia due to it's very strong Appalachian culture and the fact that it's state borders go further north than any other state in the south. This may not be as important but the most northern point of the state (Newell, West Virginia) is about 100 miles north of the Mason-Dixon line.

As for the most southern I would have to go with Kentucky. Even though Oklahoma is further south than Kentucky, it seems to have a more western feel to it than the others. So Kentucky wins this one.

I'm from Louisiana and I have never considered Oklahoma a Southern state. Kentucky most DEFINITELY is. and West Virginia is pretty close.

The question was asking about the most southern non-Confederate state... or were you just making another point?

Agreed, Oklahoma is sort of odd, it has a mixed of southern & midwestern influence.

What tips things in OK's favor, in my opinion, is the southeast quadrant's proximity to the Deep South; something KY doesn't really have.

I have no doubt that Kentucky will win this, though, due to its ties to the Southeast, which equals the South to many folks here.

West Virginia? Please.

Oh well, at least we will always have Stonewall Jackson, the mint julep and old-timey music.

Wish you HAD put Missouri in here, because Oklahoma is Southern and Western (not Midwestern at all) and Missouri is Southern (not Midwestern except in the St. Louis area - even Columbia is pretty Southern). But Kentucky is pure Southern.

Some might argue that Kentucky is in fact not purely southern. Hell, the state borders Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio, so I wouldn't doubt there's some Midwestern influence found in KY. Also, while I don't know the city well, I don't think it would be far-fetched to say that Louisville is probably more culturally similar to Indianapolis and Cincinnati than it is Atlanta or Memphis.

In Missouri, draw a line from Joplin to Rolla to Cape Girardeau. Everything north of it is Midwestern; everything south of it is Southern.

In Kentucky, draw a line from Owensboro to Lexington to Ashland. Everything north of it is Midwestern; everything south of it is Southern.

In West Virginia, draw a line from Huntington to Sutton to Elkins. Everything north of it is Midwestern; everything south of it is Southern.
