The premarital sex thing doesn't fully explain the divorce rates because there is nowhere in the US that I have lived or visited extensively that "frowns upon" premarital sex between adults, particularly those who are over about 20. It's an expectation in a long term relationship. I see Colorado's divorce rate is higher end, though I personally don't know a lot of people who've been divorced, but CO is very libertarian which probably explains some of it.
I do know in general - both on an individual level and a state-by-state level - people who wait longer to get married the first time tend to be more likely to be married just one time. An argument can be made, therefore, that where in "red states" someone has a failed marriage in their 20s, this time tends to be spent in long-term relationships without marriage in "blue states" - hence it isn't recorded.
Why do people focus so much on the presidential elections and not on local politics? No NewEngland state voted for a Republican since 2000? Hasn't MA had several Republican governors and senators? The current MA governor is a Republican. The governor of Maine is a Republican, and Maine has one Republican senator. The governor of NH is a Repub, as is the governor of Vermont. The only NE state with a Democratic governor is Rhode Island. I don't feel like looking up all the senators right now.
Republicans do better for statewide office in New England than federal office (just 2 of 33). The national Republican Party does not have high favorability in the region. This has basically been caused by the national party's hard tilt to the right. Some of the Republican statewide office holders, such as Governor Baker in MA, would be considered liberal Democrats in other parts of the nation based on positions.

Whereas I’ve never been to the Midwest but I know Ohio and Minnesota are nothing alike. Ik Missouri and Nebraska are very different as well.
People outside of New England think Maine and Connecticut are super similar but they’re just not.
People outside of New England don't think about New England. Many, my bet is a majority, of people outside of the Northeast can't name all of the states that comprise New England. As such they really don't have an overall impression of it. Maine, huh? You'd be lucky if people knew more about Maine other than that it's cold and snowy.

There's not a straight line relationship between early marriage and a high divorce rate or vice versa. The state with the second lowest ages for first marriage (Idaho, 24.9 women and 26.7 men) is in the second lowest group of divorce rates. Minnesota, one of the lowest rate states, has an average age of 27.2/29.2. Rhode Island is in the 4th tier (out of 5 with 1 being the lowest) for divorce yet has one of the highest ages for marriage (29.6/30.7).

When people think of the East Coast it's usually the Bos-Wash corridor anything north or south of that (minus Florida) gets forgetton about.

There are people down south that think New England is a state. Nobody thinks the Intermountain West is a state. It does have a stronger regional identy than almost anywhere in the country.
I’ve said it before on other threads, but if New England were a state it would only be the 18th largest in the Union by land area: smaller than the state of Utah. To compare it to the Intermountain West isn’t quite apples-to-oranges.

Most people are not quite that ignorant, and most people do view New England as a region.
