Haha! I just came across this thread and I find it kind of funny!
A friend of mine once said she knows she can die happy when she meets an Asian with a Southern accent. I guess she's never met one. Neither have I though.
With the large cities in the south having vast amounts of their growth from people outside the region, suburban accents are not nearly as pronounced as outer lying areas in the south. My kids were all born in Atlanta, now in Dallas and they do not have strong southern accents. They have cousins from just an hour south of Atlanta with much stronger southern accents and cousins from the Texas panhandle with much more of a Texas twang than they have.
Most Asians that come south seem to settle in these larger metropolitan areas and aren't exposed to a real strong southern accent. One exception: my college roommate moved to a very small town in south GA and married a lady in the town who was originally from Korea. Her mother married a GI from the town while he was stationed in Korea and she and her sister came to Georgia when she was only 12. She is a real joy to listen to. She still has a strong Korean accent, but every once in a while, she will throw in southern phases and stretch out a one syllable word to a two or three syllable word. Strong southern mixed with strong Korean, it is a hoot.
Her sister was much younger when they came to Georgia and has much less of a Korean accent, but she has spent most of her adult life in Atlanta and doesn't have as strong of a southern accent either.
Yes it is. He is from Little Rock, AR. Are you going to tell me Arkansas isn't in the South?
Any true Southerner would know that there is more than one type of Southern accent.
And Ryan Seacrest is from Atlanta. These TV types, if they do have southern accents naturally, work hard to get rid of them for their profession.
I hear little if no southern speech patterns when listening to him speak.
