Considering moving from Florida and finding employment in Oil City, cost of living too high in South Florida, cannot make it without a six figure salary
My family now resides just above Ft Myers in South Florida, and their housing costs much less than mine in MD. It all depends on where you're looking, and what you're looking for.
Id rather live bare bones day in and out in paradise then making 20 dollars an hour in a place I wouldnt want to be.
Working is never a waste of time. Its simply keeping things relative. Work to live, don't live to work.
I see you also live in south FL. How is your job doing? Do you like living here? I dont. I know theres no shortcuts but Oil City has it easy because my hard earned money actually gets me a house. In south FL you cant get the house you deserve.
South Florida is home. We own our own business. Work pretty much 7 days a week and are on call 24/7. We both commute 11 miles and telecommute as well. We love our home.
Pennsylvania minimum wage is $6.25 an hour. In my neck of the woods, an entry level job is lucky to pay you $7.00 an hour.
The federal minimum of $7.25 overrides that. I wont accept any jobs less than the fed min wage. But manybe my home business will explode soon and ill have enough money on that alone to move and afford a nice big house
Uh, so if the city is unaffordable, we should make ourselves poorer by not having jobs?
And DUH -- in cheaper cities, THE PAY SCALE IS MUCH LOWER. I'd doubt you'd find a job in Oil City anyway, an $8/hour would be pretty darn good. Remember, hardly anyone lives there.
The major point: If it had good jobs, people would make money, demand there be more to do (so construction would boom, housing prices go up, etc).
$7.00-$8.00 an hour is about normal for an entry level job in oil city,and getting a job there isn't hard,but if you expect to start off anywhere $10.00 or better you may need luck because people jump on those jobs. So yes there are jobs,but overall cost of living there is cheaper.And yes you can make it there even if you are single.I did.
The federal minimum wage is not applied by law to the individual states. I learned the other day some wait-staff in WVA got 2.13/hr, while their counterparts in PA get 2.87.
Hardly what I call a wage, but apparently they are operating within the law because they calculate a salary anticipating the worker(s) receive tips.

Current federal minimum wage is $5.15,states can set their own minimum wage above that,and several already do.
On February 1, 2007 the Senate voted overwhelmingly to increase the Federal Minimum wage to $7.25 per hour over the course of two years. The Federal minimum wage increase, if signed by President Bush, will be the first increase in a decade.
A final bill still needs to be sent to President Bush for approval before the increase will take effect and be signed into law. If and when President Bush signs the bill, the Federal Minimum Wage increase will officially become a new law and an increase will be in effect 60 days after that. The breakdown of the increase will be $5.85 60 days after the new increase is signed into law, then $6.55 a year later and finally $7.25 a year after that.
lots of places are right to work and they dont just pay minimum wage to college educated people.
the original thread doesnt make much sense. New York is very expensive but it is well worth the salaries and you dont have to live in the heart of the city to be able to have the job.
Lots of gopher jobs pay just at the minimum wage and some maybe even below that. Many mess with the hours so they have little or no benefits.
And strangely enough peeps can make a living at it in the regions of SE Ohio.
Lot of them probably have two jobs of some type. If you can get a job in Oil City for $8.00 don't look a gift horse in the choppers. It is even worse in the big cities. Used too was blue collar work would pay $14.00 a hour. Now you got to be from Brazil and will work for $7.00 under the table. And they claim that does not take American jobs.
living in Pa and having been in Oil City, what would make a person want to go there for living? a Job and cheaper prices? uh ok, i would rather a beautiful place with the same wages
