That reminds me of something here. You know someone isn't from downstate NY when they call it a "cookout"--we say it like "ba-bick-que"
Hm. That's interesting. My roommate from Los Angeles doesn't like when I call it a cookout, he says it sounds country, but that's all my family ever calls it. He calls it a barbecue too.

It actually does sound a little country, the word cookout. I didn't know people in MA used that word though. My friends say BBQ and are from western MA.

I can tell by the way they pronounce "pen" If they say it with the "e" sound, they're not from around here. If they say it like "pin" they're from somewhere in the South. Usually, not always.
Also, I've noticed this with guys because I've been working at a camp for incoming college Freshman. If you wear flips flops like this:
... then you're probably from up North. Guys around here stopped wearing those 10 years ago
Everything is east-west; as in 1st Ave E, 1st Ave W, E 2nd St, W 2nd St...on a grid it makes NO sense because Duluth stretches 33 miles along Lake Superior, so actually 'out west' is really south (it goes along I-35 which leads south to Minneapolis after 150 miles) and those in east Duluth are along Highway 61 which leads to Thunder Bay, ON, Canada, going north.
State College, PA is similar, for a similar reason since the grid is rotated almost exactly 45 degrees to match the terrain. So, College Avenue downtown is divided into east and west, east is north PA 26 and west is south PA 26. The main cross street is North and South Atherton, respectively west Business US 322 and east Business US 322.
I call it cookout myself and always have. I have heard people say Barbecue here too but it's few and far between.
