If there was a proposal to move the nation's capital from Washington, D.C., what city would make the best capital?

If I remember correctly it was in New York in the beginning...then they moved it down to DC...

It would be nice if it were more centrally located so more people would have easy access to it. Like Kansas City.

Yes I'd like to see it close to center and not in the east. Not that i expect they'll move it soon.

Question How about Denver?

When I was living in Colorado, I heard that Denver would be designated as the temporary national capital if Washington DC was destroyed by a catastrophic natural or man-made disaster (i.e. giant meteorite or nuclear holocaust). That is because Denver is the only metropolitan area outside of Washington DC that has offices of every significant federal government agency. The Denver Federal Center, actually located in the suburb of Lakewood, is a huge complex.

Capitals, as defined as being the seat of national government, of the independent colonies of North America and the United States in order from 1776 to 1800:
  1. Philadelphia, PA
  2. Baltimore, MD (described by one congressman as an, "extravagant hole.")
  3. Lancaster, PA
  4. York, PA (1,800 people but 13 taverns!)
  5. Philadelphia, PA
  6. Princeton, NJ (removed to Princeton to flee lynch mobs of veterens demanding back pay)
  7. Annapolis, MD
  8. Trenton, NJ
  9. New York, NY
  10. Washington, DC

Washington is such a dump. Our governmnet deserves everything it has created out of its home city. I wouldn't wish our federal government on any other poor, unsuspecting city or hamlet.

of those Chicago

need it away from the east coast and more centralized

however I really dont want it moved to any of those

It also has to remain its own non state so being moved to Denver has to be temporary untill they create a place for it. It cant be moved to an allready developed MetroArea. So we need to find a place somewhere central and desolate enough but close enough to an Intl airport and stores so all they need to do is build building complexes.

Where can we find thar?

My opinion of course was above. Why I say has to be its own b/c it needs to stay impartial as it leads the country not just one party. If it becomes part of a city then it will take it over and that city will effect the state esp in funds distrubtion and so forth.
