Had The United States defeated Japan by naval blockade more Americans would've been killed than were in reality; just the day to day wastage of keeping huge fleets and armies at hand entails considerable waste of lives not to mention the combat losses from the air and naval missions a blockade would've required. And The United States was under no moral obligation to pursue the war in a manner that would've minimized Japanese dead at the expense of American dead.

Not to mention that while this blockade was going on the Japanese would've still been up to their sadistic hi-jinks in China. How many Chinese should've died to assuage the guilt of those who think using the Bomb was wrong?

And note that victory through blockade (STARVATION in other words) would probably have killed more Japanese than the Bombs did.

Probably? I think it is pretty clear that far more would have died. Starvation is a slow process and Showa Japan was probably willing to lose at least a million of their own people for the glory of the Emperor.

At least I'm not sucker-bait for spin doctors. That claim to know what some emperor that died thousands of years ago was thinking when this or that happened.

When Julius Caesar was being stabbed, do you really think his deepest thoughts were of the treachery of his friend Brutus? No, his thoughts were most likely, "Oh ****, I'm getting stabbed! That ****ing hurts!"

The battle is won when your opponent no longer attacks you, and you're still standing.

An intelligent people want a government that has very little power or influence over their everyday lives. So why is there so much law and government involvement in OUR lives, as Americans--assuming that we're an intelligent people?

An emperor is in some lofty tower, and doesn't really affect the lives of the peons he's not in direct contact with.

So you say. I'm reminded of the libertarian view that we need enough government to keep people from stealing from me but not so much that I can't steal from others.

I don't even think we need THAT much government. The person to keep others from stealing from you...is you.
