and some people think he was one of our greatest presidents...
I don't think I've ever heard anyone say Truman was one of our greatest presidents. He ruined his political capital with Korea and his support of Mccarthism (sp?). Are you sure you're not mixing up Truman with FDR?
IMHO we would have failed. japan was well prepared for invasion. had superweapons of the time, courtesy of germany.
Most of the superweapons you are referring to never left the blueprint stage. The few that were actually built were easily sunk, shot down or destroyed. They lacked the support network (just like the magical Me 262 German fighter jet) to be used effectively. The huge Yamato class battleships were easily sunk by U.S. airmen because they lacked air cover. Numerous giant seaplane carrying I-400 class submarines that were intended to sneak to the Panama Canal and sabotage our sea route from the Atlantic to the Pacific were used for target practice after they were captured.
As for the Rising Sun possessing the ability to make heavy water, that is for the tinfoil hat crowd. I think there was a sub in transit from Germany to Japan carrying atomic scientists but it sunk on the way. I haven't heard or read anywhere that said Japan was even close to the bomb, although it is apparent they were desperately trying to develop one.
We would've invaded Japan and more lives would have been lost.
It would have devastating, but most of this thread doesn't understand what total war is. We were not in WWII to appease or spread democracy, we were in it to survive. A complete Japan threatened our survival, and yes, we were sending a message to Russia as well. Hindsight is always 20/20, but we did the right thing.
The president I was referring to was FDR...but when Steve said that he believed he was one of the greatest (since I didn't actually NAME a NAME...I asked which one HE meant.
By the way, there was NO reason for us to invade Japan. They were defeated.

Japan was not defeated until they withdrew their enormous army from China. They were not going to do that unless they were completely vanquished and forced to surrender.
Japan was not defeated until they agreed to stop fighting. It required the atomic bombs to make them agree. If there had been no such bombs, it would have required either an invasion or a prolonged naval blockade which would have come at the price of tremendous allied losses due to kamikazes.
You are clearly mistaken with the above.
