This article is not recent, but gives a clear picture showing the 12 million # is flawed.
Silliness. There are a number of ways the number can be estimated and thinking it may be off a million or two - either way - is probably rational.
Fifty million would likely mean that most are alien beings from another space warp or such as there is no loss column available from which they could have come on the earth.

12 million may be too conservative, but 60-70 million is impossible.
Most of our illegal immigration comes from SOB and Asia.
Now, if you were to assume every Asian and Hispanic in the country were illegal, which they obviously aren't, there are only 60-70 million Asians and Hispanics in the United States, total, combined.
In the OP we see a linked article ... an opinion piece ... providing absolutely no foundation for the assertion ... other than one person's opinon. When opponents of immigration reform post such things it only hurts the credibility of their argument. Calling the assertion absurd is being kind.
A Dave Gibson (what are his journalistic credentials again?) article saying a fifth of the U.S. population are illegal aliens is pure comedy. Put on his "Examiner" channel 7 months after the start of President Obama's first term as President, it then suggests that our current administration is not responsible for the vast bulk of illegal aliens in the United States. Five years later, if you believe all of the stories here that the waves of illegal aliens are continuing, even encouraged by President Obama, the number now has to be closer to 80 to 90 million.
A little over a year ago, "malamute" (responding to a thread I started) said that illegal aliens were almost doubling in number every four years:

Then you can look at the statistics that are given like in this article which shows an almost doubling of illegals every 4 years.
Which means that by 2026 there will (if we take the 60 million figure as correct) be 480 million illegals in the U.S. -- and the total population of Mexico and Central America will be approximately zero. ¡Ay caramba!
I don't know how many illegals are here. No one does. What I do know is that we need to pass laws like E-verify and make life impossible for them. No rewards, no free pass.

I agree.
If this so-called nightmare of an "immigration reform" bill passes, I think that politicians will be surprised at how many illegal aliens will come out of the woodwork. When the 1986 amnesty passed, they were surprised that about twice as many applied than was expected.
