The Phillips Hwy that you are referring to is wayy north, (towards Downtown) of were the the O.P is looking. The area near JTB is fairly new with a lot of job options in the area and near I-95.

it's not really way north of JTB, once you start getting close to emerson it gets real sketchy real quick

Default Recent Jacksonville Transplant

There is PLENTY to rent in that area, called Southside. There are apartment complexes and houses but I rented a newly renovated condo from a private owner. Check Belle Rive Blvd, nice and quiet communities with apartments and condo communities. There are also several communities at 9A and Baymeadows, this area is up and coming and has parks near by for the little ones. Some of the property management companies have web sites that you can look up what is for rent, some off the top of my head include San Marco Properties and Realty Select Services. I hope you enjoy Jacksonville as much as I have.

There are sections of Phillips Hgwy/US1 in the general Emerson Road area where there are strip clubs.

This is a stretch that is industrial - no one lives there! The strippers usually stay in their workplace, you won't see them unless you go inside . You will see the ocassional prostitute on the street, but it is not "rampant" by any means. There are sections of the city that are far, far worse (better? ) for prostitute-viewing.

Years back, it was a different story, but today you won't see many working girls on Phillips Highway. The area has changed for the better and continues to change.

There's a motel right around Rte. 1 and JTB where JSO has more than once broken up hooker rings with the johns' photos in the paper. They may not walk around rte. 1 but they're there.

It's the oldest profession, right? So sure, we have prostitution in Jacksonville, we have drug-dealing too. Both can happen in the worst and in the best of neighborhoods.

How about that nice little strip mall with the "massage therapy" storefront...know what happens in there? Ever heard of a "happy ending"?

How about that neighbor who has a lot of "friends" coming and going? Funny, they only stop by his house for 5 minutes at a time . Maybe he's just dealing weed out of his house, maybe something else, but what better place to deal drugs than out of your nice living room with the widescreen tv?

Drugs and prostitution doesn't just happen in the "slums", it's just that in the "slums" they don't have the option of taking it off the street, so they have to do it out in the open .

I always have to laugh when I see a story on the news and someone says that classic line "I never thought that kind of thing could happen in THIS neighborhood! "

You seem to know an awful lot about the hookers locations and schedules, can you fill us in on rates too, just in case someone like yourself is looking to move to town.

BTW, just found out my office would be in the in the "Perimeter Center", looking at mapquest, it off Baymeadow Road and I95.

Thanks again
I work in the same area and you can find a reasonable rent in a nice neighborhood within short commuting distance. The "Avenues" area on Southside Blvd. has some decent rentals that back up to nice residential neighborhoods and are very close to shopping and restraunts (If I feel so inclined I am within very easy walking distance to two shopping centers including one with a Target, an very rare situation in JAX). You can also find reasonable neighborhoods on Baymeadows EAST (going towards 9A) of Southside blvd. I would avoid rentals on Baymeadows WEST of Southside for the most part. There are other neighborhoods close by but I would guess this would be your best bet for a very short commute, good neighborhood, and reasonable rents. Its the area I chose and I only have to fill up my 15 MPG truck twice per month, sometimes less If I don't take weekend trips down to the beaches, and I have had zero crime problems.
