Utah is the state to look at for economic tips. Utah has poor, but improving public schools, very high taxes, and its demographics turn off many people, yet it leads the way for economic and population growth even going into this recession.

Ya,.. I was looking at the huffington post article on the Best and Worst Metro's in the recession... Turns out Albuquerque where I also live is #15 best metro. Las Vegas is 89th Worst... Yikes..I didnt see any Utah cities of Metros in the top 20 best though.

Hard to deal with Utah. Its peculiarities make me doubt you can find any useful stuff there. The "other" gnvernment is just too powerful.

AZ however is similar but is doing a lot better than the west or SW in general.

Note that the well diversified CA and OR are hit much worse than NV.

True, This I will believe.. Oregon and Cali have many more cities and people than Nevada thats why. It just wasnt booming as fast. Nevada just has Vegas that is suffering and parts of Reno.

nevada, not even in the top 5 for unemployment, not even the top for foreclosures...

Holy guacamole did you see CA's budget deficit compared to the rest of the nation? The only state that even comes close is NY, and their deficit is just over 50% of CA's deficit. Unreal!

Tell that to the three or four people on your block that are out of a job.

What is happening to out city? I know it's bad everywhere but it seems to be worse in Vegas.

God bless us all.
The true unemployment rate (including those who have stopped looking for work) is much higher than the official numbers coming from the BLS. I think the true unemployment is a figure referred to as U6. My guess is that the official unemployment rate in Nevada (currently 11.3%) is nowhere near reaching a maximum. I think it'll be officially at 13-15% before coming down; naturally, the true unemployment rate will be much higher than this.

Michigan's official unemployment rate is already 14.1% That's excluding much of the carnage from the Chrysler and GM Bankruptcies. It's going to get worse!

You must live on a crappy block.....the one where I live is two blocks long, both sides of the street,,,,and the only one out of a job is the retired Doctor two doors up. [and that includes the halfway house on the corner.]

If they measured unemployment the same way now as they did then, the difference would be much smaller than it is. If official Nevada unemployment is 11.3%, the true unemployment (U6, considering people who have stopped looking for work and those who are underemployed, etc) could easily be higher than 20%
