OTOH, New York has the best consumer-protection insurance laws in the country when it comes to Medicare supplement policies for seniors. It is a "guaranteed issue" state which means that a company can never turn someone down for a policy, nor restrict their issue to specific periods of time. It is a "community rated" state which means they can't charge someone more because of their age, claims history, or health status; they can only charge according to what part of NY state you live in. When it comes to Medigap policies, seniors have more economic freedom of choice in NYS than in any other state in the country, with the exception of CT which has the same laws re: Medigaps as NY.
NY had these protections long before Obamacare was even a gleam in a politician's eye, LOL. (btw, the new ACA "protections" do not apply to Medicare-related insurance)
As far as " New York has among the strictest gun laws in the country, motorists are highly regulated, home schools are highly regulated, and cigarette taxes are the highest in the country", I personally think all of those laws are very GOOD things. And would add to that, I am happy we had one of the earliest and some of the toughest smoking bans in the country was well. And I am an indepedent by political persuasion, btw, lest anyone jump to conclusions either way, LOL
How ironic that liberals are more than happy with an overabundance of laws created to protect people from themselves. What is so liberal about that?
I'm pretty economically liberal and my husband is a socialist (Canadian) so we think high taxes are, in theory, a good thing. I also think home school, gun and cigarette regulations are preferable to none.

Haha thanks for the peace of mind. I was actually born in the south to displaced New Yorkers. My mother had 10yrs of culture shock! But this was rural Georgia in the 80s and we were catholic Yankees

What do you mean by oppression? Like the "conservative police" will come by your house and lock you up for being a liberal? LI is just like anywhere else, there are both conservatives and liberals, because this is NY there are certainly more liberals than conservatives, even on LI. But no its not as left as the city is so don't expect that.
Long Island is not nearly as liberal as NYC, and not quite as liberal as Westchester, but is probably similar to most of CT. Fiscally slightly right of center to moderate, and socially liberal. The tea party type of conservatism really doesn't exist in any big way on Long Island, the religious social conservatism that dominates much of the south certainly doesn't fly on Long Island.
With that being said there are certainly some areas that tend to be a bit more conservative than the rest of LI as a whole, and other areas a bit more liberal.

^^ This basically sums it up. There's naturally pockets of every spectrum, from left of left liberals to Tea Party'ers, but Smash255 pretty much nailed it.
Or am I reading too much into what people post on these boards? I've noticed fairly libertarian streak in these parts.
