I think both cities have gang problems and are run down old properties. There's alot of good people in both cities, and I'm sure many people don't have a choice to live elsewhere. I had a hispanic friend from Compton, and he said it wasn't that bad, people blow these areas out of proportion.

A lot of the Hollydale kids go to school in Downey which is way better than the LAUSD schools in the rest of South Gate. Now this isn't saying that South Gate is on par with Compton. It's not even close, it's just not somewhere i'd want to live. Anyways that's just my two cents...

I love Downey! Its like a safe haven from all its surrounding cities, but as for Southgate and Lynwood HELL NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!

these areas are not that bad. especially not Sg. but it is true thas some areas can be dodgy, dont forget that SG borders watts. as does lynwood. so the closer to LA proper the worse. yet it is not as bad as most people think. in SG the houses still look the same as before. the streets still look the same except it is mostly brown with some black and that seems to scare a lot of people. most streets still have those old 10 feet tall concrete light post (ala pasadena) and a lot of houses dont have fences around their yards. some parts are bad others arent. and well Lynwood, it defintely has seen better days. but it is by no means compton, watts, east los, etc.

Southgate and Lynwood were nice cities to live in 40 plus years ago. Total ghetto scene now.

Sough Gate &Lynwood are pretty bad, Downey and whittier are a little better, but still bad. Trust me, you don't want to live in or around any of these cities.
