What neighborhood was that?

OP, get a dash cam and drive around during the day. If you want an interview or two go to a place to eat or a grocery store. When the guy in the parking lot comes up to ask for gas money, cop an interview with him first and then give him some $$ for it. He'll be happy to say whatever you want.

If you have a little cash, put an ad in craigslist explaining what you want, pay a hundred for some footage.

Think outside the box. Good luck!

There are other worst areas like Westmont and Skid Row.

Tired of hearing about white boys wanting to go to the hood though.

I wouldn't do it. White people are targeted pretty heavily in black neighborhoods no matter where you are. This is common knowledge, however not really "PC".

Call the local precinct and ask them their opinion. If they tell you that you should be concerned, ask the studio to spring for a cop to escort you (plain clothes) for the few hours you will be there. Pay the off duty cop for his time.

LOL...so true. I will add what is so different about LA(compared to east coast cities), you see well maintained homes in areas that are considered bad.

Add in white boys who have never stepped foot in LA or probably even CA, and think walking around with their smart phone filming stuff makes them an independent film company.

Again, I don't care where you do this, you can't just start filming people of any color, in any area and not have to worry about(as they would be right) them questioning you as to what you're up to.

Unless you want an altercation.
