When you physically move to another state, most states give you 10 days to register at their DMV. Some states take your plates at that time and others let you do what you want with them.

Why would you want to register your car in California? Are you moving to a state that actually charges more than California? You're a resident where you register to vote. As stated above, if you live in another state, they're going to expect you to register your car there.

I have my CA plates hanging in the garage... People don't take too kindly to CA plates out this way.

Sounds like a wonderful place. Do they have children with close relatives there as well?

Lately I've seen a few California plates in Florida while driving to work. You know they must be proud to have those plates on their cars. I know I would be. Civilized people.

The accurate answer is that whenever you move to a different state, to live, you have x amount of time to register the car under that state. I say "X" because each state is different, some states give you 30 days others 60 or more.

You could just bypass the laws, because nobody would know, but cops seem to make it a habit of pulling over cars with out of state tags and checking how long you have been in the state.
