I hardly follow any politics, but from what I understand MA is pretty much going to vote for the democratic nominee 99% of the time. The popular vote doesn't do anything so does that effectively mean voting does not make a difference in MA? There's only a handful of swing states so whoever lives in FL, MI, PA, etc has a vote that actually counts right?

More people voted for Al Gore and Hillary Clinton but they still lost, so what's the point? I have a feeling that will happen with Biden too.

Generally not a swing state for presidential elections, but local elections can be quite heated and there will often be hot-topic referendums. For example Markey vs Kennedy has a lot of people talking, and ranked choice voting will be on the ballot in November.

It still amazes me that candidates can win the popular vote and still lose the election. That’s ‘Murcia for yous!

Huh??? You mean for the current presidential race? In that case you are probably right, but there are many other races going on in Mass. this election cycle where your vote absolutely can make a difference. Also don't forget MA went for Reagan twice. Under the right circumstances things can go the other way.

Yes for the current presidential race.

Reagan nearly 40 years ago. I'm talking about the present.

An individual vote has not yet mattered anywhere in the US on the Presidential election (i.e. no one vote has ever determined the election). It still makes sense to vote in the presidential election if:

1) You want to vote for a third party candidate to boost their share of the national vote
2) You want to vote for a major-party candidate to boost their vote total so that you can either complain about them not winning the 'popular vote' or can point out that they won the 'popular vote'.
3) You think voting participation reflect well on your community and want to boost the participation numbers for your local area.
4) You feel a moral obligation to vote. Individual votes rarely matter, but encouraging everyone to vote does. By voting, even in noncompetitive elections, you honor that commitment.
5) You can get a sticker.

Even if you leave the Presidential spot blank there are still national elections that you will have more of an impact. The most active campaigning in my neighborhood is for the Norfolk County Register of Probate election, a position I did not even know existed a few short months ago.

So you think your vote matters only if your party wins by a single vote?

This time I will vote just to avoid that drama.

Right. Up until Bush Jr. the US were not divided the way they are today.
Reagan v Mondale in 2020 would never end up the way ended up in '84

When it comes to the national election, I don't think my vote matters here in MA since it goes Dem 99% of the time. I'll either vote Republican (if I actually like the candidate) or vote 3rd party.

When it comes to local elections, I feel like I might have more of a say, especially on state questions, and more local races.
