I myself, as a native Californian have moved to the Midwest after suffering the never ending liberalism that grips that state for most of my life. I moved "back" to the Midwest because that is where my parents are from...and most of my family lives here. I moved back to the Midwest because for all of the Midwest's issues, and there are many...it is nowhere NEAR as bad a California. California sadly has been ruined, ruined in so many ways...
In so many ways California has ceased to even be part of America...Well I like living in America and so I had to move back to where America is still America....and where it's not only O.K. to like being an American...in America....but to where it is seen as a good thing...something POSITIVE!
When I bump into other middle of the road to conservative Californians where ever I find them...(and yes there is such a thing...) ...Californians who like myself have given up on trying to "save" California and have made the painful choice to abandon the place for better living elsewhere....I welcome them....However...when I bump into LIBERAL Californians...(oddly most of whom are NOT native born Californians...but transplants themselves...) I encourage them to STAY in California. What's more...when I bump into liberals in any other state (regardless of where they're from) but particularly the Midwest... I encourage them in the strongest possible language to MOVE TO CALIFORNIA...or some other suitable place for liberals...socialists...communists... perverts, sex offenders etc.
The most biting irony is the liberals from California who are leaving the state they ruined to carry on their foolishness in other parts of the country by imposing their twisted anti-values attitudes at every possible opportunity. I NEVER welcome these people...
And a word to the wise....be VERY wary VERY concerned when recent arrivals from California start getting involved in Local Government, the PTA, school board, City Councils etc. If you let this happen...if you choose not to get involved to protect your communities and keep them the way you like them....work to preserve them the way they are...the way they've happily always been...then the Californians will change them for you into something much less pleasant...

You haven't been to Southern California. OC and San Diego are swarming with Conservatives and is the home for many conservative Values Mega churches (Rick Warren, Rev, Schuller etc). Conservative family value politicians (B1-Bob Dornan, William Dannemeyer, Duke Cunningham, Sheriff Corona, Don Haidl et. al.) and right wing nut cases (Tom Metzger and the Reverend Wiley Drake). MANY of my friends swore by Fox News, and used NewsMax as their singular "legitimate" source of information. Yep that's a real liberal environment.

So you don't want a diversity of opinions and experiences in your state? You want everyone in this state to identify with one particular mind set, political thought, religious opinion?

Seems I've heard that somewhere before.

most of the folks i knew in CA were politically conservative. they were certainly a minority though. the legislature out there is a mess. one would think it would be hard to screw up such a fine place but they manage to do a fine job of that out there, unfortunately. and i'm not saying the republicans out there are any better than the democrats.

government usually works best when there is a fine balance between parties and their respective ideals, which won't be the case out there anytime soon. but then again...not many state governments are managed very well these days. matt blunt here in missouri was likely the worst in the entire midwest. and i'm not even gonna go into the topic of illinois politics .

Totally agree.

The CA legislature is a mess. Mostly because of a pervasive sense of entitlement brought through one party domination. Could go on this one for hours.

Yeah, it's pretty 'wing-nutty' down there in SoCal, just like the heart of SF could be pretty crazy to the left. Balance is hard to find in that state, just as it can be here in MO too.

For sure, Dinsdale. This thread is supposed to be about how much CA sucks and MO doesn't, anyway though, ha ha. .

Out in this part of California the old hippies listen to the Grateful Dead, and the younger folks either listen to gangsta rap or mariachi south-of-the-border music, both with THUMP-THUMP-THUMP subwoofers.

As far as assimilating goes, it's not like native Missourians resemble the Borg or anything!
yeah, Real Rock Radio was exactly that, back in the day. it isn't much to listen to these days though, but i guess better than most stations here in MO anyway. broadcast radio is on a general decline just like most newprint.

I watched my hometown try to "preserve" itself as a small, Mayberry-esque rural enclave the entire time I was growing up there. The city council, especially, worked very hard to keep business out of the town, especially in the 1980's, for fear of the town growing and becoming "big". Those businesses...and the jobs that would have accompanied them...simply moved to neighboring towns. The lack of any economic opportunity in my hometown keeps the poverty rate consistently above 25% (even before the recession) and makes damn sure that nearly everyone has to leave the area as soon as they graduate high school to find any work that pays more than a buck or two an hour above minimum wage. Now many of the people who live there are elderly, leading to a large reduction in population coming over the next few decades.

In my towns case, the preservationist attitude, and "lets keep things just the way they are" are slowly killing the town. Heck, a few Californians moving in and actually investing in the town would help the place quite a bit. I personally left after I graduated high school for better opportunity...if I had stayed their I'd be scraping by at just over minimum wage (as many of my friends who are still there are). I love the area, but that is not the life I want.

Wow, I actually agree with you on something.

Many people don't realize just how purple of a state Missouri is. You have to remember that McCain only won Missouri by 6,000 votes...the closest of any state in the country. The conservative-liberal balance keeps Missouri a balanced state, and the politicians more honest than more one-sided states, IMO, and is another reason why I like this state so much.

You didnt offend me, you puzzled me!
As far as enjoying Florida, thats impossible, this beautiful state has been ruined by overdevelopment, and rapacious greed. I dont know how, or when the economy will ever recover.

That's what southern California used to be like. But Dornan and Dannemeyer have been out of elected office for over a decade now. And in Tom Metzger's case I would never equate white "supremacism" with conservatism, or at least conservatism as I know it (God created all of us equally) (And don't even get me started with ACORN or La Raza!). There are now many places in California that have far overtaken Orange County in terms of supporting conservative causes, but they're not large population centers. Santa Ana and Anaheim, the two largest cities in Orange County, are very liberal and moderate-to-liberal, respectively. It really has changed a lot there.

For conservative bastions, you'd need to go to Sutter County, Tehama County, Glenn County, and the city of Redding, which are all north of Sacramento. Ditto the Sierra foothills, but again the coastal areas dwarf these inland areas in population, just as St. Louis and Kansas City exert a huge influence on Missouri politics--and generally not for the better.

I grew up in Davis, CA (just outside of Sacramento) and didn't realize it at the time but that is one of the most miserably liberal places in all of California. My goodness, those people were stuck up. I couldn't believe how friendly the people were in comparison when I moved elsewhere. I used to think it was my childhood perception that made me feel this way but I went there for an assignment a few months ago and nope, they're still miserable jerks.

If everyone in Cali were rich they wouldn't be so eager to move away to where they can find cheap land and then ***** about all the people that live there. The people acting nuts has kept land cheap and everyone away for decades... it's a plot I tell ya
