Even making an attempt to speak French can take you a long way. How many Americans would be receptive to a French person walking up to them in say Philadelphia and asking for directions in French, my guess is not too many.
They all know English.

Disagree with your first sentence.
However, I agree with your second sentence.

I did not have that experience and neither did my friends and relatives.

I like Ontario though.

Of course they do, because they are required to learn it, but their official and primary language is French. It's like going to Europe and expecting everyone to simply speak to you in English because the majority of people know it, even though it isn't their primary language.

On that note, the United States is one of the few countries where learning a second language to capability isn't required. Regardless, when I travel I at least make an attempt to speak the primary language of the place I am in. If I can't get my point across or have trouble, I always make sure I know how to politely ask them in their language if they speak English and are OK with continuing our conversation in English. I've never met anyone who gave me any issues after I at least made the attempt.

I've traveled to other countries that don't speak English as their primary language, and they're not as rude as the people in Quebec. Again, I love Canada in general, but Quebec no thanks.

The mascot is a different story... it's pretty stupid but benign and I have no complaints about the Phanatic. Maybe I would complain if everyone started carrying Phanatic puppets or stuffed animals around with them.
Let's see. . . you came from elsewhere (which makes you an outsider) to get a free ride on a degree & leave (That makes you temporary or short-term if you prefer.) You are welcome to your opinion, but, face it, there is no earthly reason for you to believe that your pronouncement about people being tacky would be met with any response other than what you got.

I don't really care about mascots, they're mainly just for kids' entertainment, but I was just pointing out that as far as mascots go, the Phanatic is probably the "best" in sports.

The gist of this seems to be "you guys aren't the norm and you should be ashamed of it". I always thought we were unique here in SJ but I think it's a good thing. It's fun to root for teams in an area where people are really into them. Come down to one of our local bars and watch a game with us when the playoffs start (of course we'll be in ) or an Eagles game one winter Sunday, and you'll see the most passionate fans around... and I'm proud to be one of them.
