Well, you're addressing someone who knows the area BEFORE there was a track here - and it was a far more desirable family destination than it has been since the track and casinos did a "double whammy" on the tourist's discretionary spending choices. Used to be two of everything families enjoyed - bowling alleys, skating rinks, riding stables, miniature golf courses, etc. And the shopping area was busy all day - not deserted in the afternoons when the races are on like they are now on weekend days.
The track has been there for over 50 years (AFAIK)....so you DO go back quite a ways, LOL!!
I'll bet ya do!! Been meaning to ask ya about how you like your new new neighborhood?
So far, I like my new neighborhood fine.....all nice and cookie-cutter recent construction (my house was built in 2007), thank you for asking!
I will be glad when this craziness (it's been one thing after another) settles down, and I have a chance to actually get out and explore/meet more people!
Sounds like you've been having as much fun as I have, Cathy. Here I thought it was just bad luck and all the fun associated with moving to a new State.

Hope your craziness lets up soon.
LOL!! Just when I think it will settle down and get better, something else happens!! Did you ever find a good mechanic?
But it is smoothing out a bit, so.......
So how do you like T or C? When I drove through last year, I felt sort of creeped out, and I don't know why! Maybe it's because it was the middle of the day, and there didn't seem to be anybody there.

I didn't mention that all that diversity was contained along the SINGLE main street through town - and until well after WWII it remained unpaved. Since there was no "Ski Apache" yet, the people who owned tourist oriented businesses made it work with ONLY summer traffic, and like today, most of that was on summer weekends between the Memorial / Labor Day holidays.
The huge scare that was perpetrated by the track owner this past year is just that. Totally without merit as far as affecting either real estate prices or desirability of the area to out-of-staters.

I find that hard to believe, but as you live there--and know so much more about the area's history than I do, I'll take your word for it.
I just know that we enjoyed many summer weekends at the track from time to time. I never saw Ruidoso without the track, so.....
As for the ski area, that's where quite a few Texans learn to ski. It's just too bad that it has apparently come under such poor management and weather the past few years, with few good seasons.

And that was the crux of the problem when it came to convincing business owners that Hubbard was as much as exclaiming that "the sky is falling" (or will fall). I wrote at LEAST six letters to the editor attempting to voice my opinion in opposition to giving Hubbard unearned and unwarranted tax dollars. Not a one was published. My opinion IS based on knowing the history from pre-WWII primitive times to the installation of the first race track - also a primitive affair. Am I anti-gambling? YOU BET!!
