So im guessing most of the mexican population in NYC is 1st generation immigrants?

I live in LA and I see the different generations of mexicans. Its pretty bad out here with the gang violence, especially between the blacks and mexicans trying to kill each other off. The sad thing is, alot of the immigrants that come here to just work and put food on the table end up falling into the same trap and end up in gangs or other illegal activities.

Also, Miami has many pretty Cuban neighborhoods that are safe and some that are not so safe. It is the same as any other city. You cannot say that all Cuban neighborhoods in Miami are safe or aren't safe. But as a whole, Cubans do the best of any Latins in this country IMO. It is pretty hard to find massive communities of Latins anywhere in America that have the wealth of some of these Cuban neighborhoods in South Florida.

On another note, I have always wondered how people in NYC view "nuyoricans". Down here in Florida, Puerto Ricans DESPISE the negative image nuyoricans place on their people.
I agree. Puerto Ricans from Florida and even nearby New Jersey are very different from the ones in New York. They are more upwardly mobile and it is proven that they have waaay higher incomes as well.

This is certainly the case among the students in my high school.

The fact that it's high school doesn't mean it's invalid or "nonsense."

Well speaking for myself I did a lot of dumb things in high school, and I had a lot of dumb opinions I thought I was so right and sure about.

People in High School are still pretty immature, although they don't like to think that. Heck some people never quite grow up past high school, which is kinda sad.

It is nonsense when you are extrapolating the actions of HS KIDS and somehow making assumptions/observations about the community or neighborhood. Unless we are to assume that the "pregnance pact" by the teens in Gloucester is representative of whites pro-teen pregnancy/fatherless kids views as socially acceptable and normal? Or are we to assume the horrendously violent young Columbine students who murdered numerous classmates is representative of typical extreme violence in white communities?

Clearly these HS events are not representative of the community at large...and neither is any immature popular kids vs nerds vs whomever..let's be serious here..it's HS and that behavior represents HS and not much else.

Here's one of my favorite quotes:

"People who think they know everything are quite annoying to those of us who actually DO."

Thanks. It's been nice chatting with you.

Agreed Nooyowker...I am a completely different person than I was in HS and made plenty of mistakes, did dumb things, said bad things, and was pretty much a HS kid! So let's keep things in perspective and forget about what is happening in HS.

That being said...there is always tension with new groups entering neighborhoods, as NYC has proven repeatedly over the course of its history..it is human nature and not anyone's "fault". We are human beings, for better or worse...that's what we do...so let's not read too much into it.
