Burning anyone with a lit cigarette is considered torture. Always has been. I have NEVER heard of anyone that considers torture an appropriate form of discipline, now or in the past. Now my mother was a child back in the 1930's and 40's and her ultra strict upbringing did involve whippings with a switch or even a razor strop and she vividly told those horror stories to us when we were children to explain to us how far over the line that sort of discipline was.
Hug your kids (of all ages and genders) everyday. Period. Full stop.
