My parents don't quite understand what I do, but we talk about work in generalities--are things going well, is my boss being a jerk, how did my presentation go, etc. That's pretty standard with friends and family. Nobody really cares about the nuts and bolts stuff.

Same with my family. To be honest, my husband doesn't even know the nuts and bolts of my job, and I don't know that much about his.

I know what both my kids do. Should it be secret? Why would your parents not want to talk about your job/career?

Is this odd or unusual in most families? How much does your family (parents, brothers and sisters) know about your work? Have they ever visited your office or workplace? Are they interested in seeing where you work?
They have seen where I work and they know all the details...schedule, pay, etc.

We are interested in each other's lives.

My Mom really has no clue what my job is or what I do. She can't even pronounce it.

She can't believe I get paid for my work, I teach people to use adaptive equipment. Usually software.

My mother knows a great deal about my job -- what I do, what my company does, the names of the people I work with, the names of my bosses, my fiscal year, etc.

Both my parents know quite well what I do because I'm in the same profession as them.

My Mother has always known about all of the different employment I have had over my lifetime and she actually understands it all. She is a very intelligent woman.

I think they have a very general idea, but they don't have a clue about the specifics.

I think my Mom is just amazed I maintain employment, and support myself, have enough money to help her out, own a car, and live in a decent place. I think she thought I would be homeless.
