He seems to be trying to do to the state what he did to the DHHS.

Hmm. How is a reduction in tax rates an increase?

Major N.C. tax changes start in new year | CharlotteObserver.com

Oh wait, you were talking about the sales tax alignments. At least these marginal sales tax increases (which seem to happen under every administration) apply to everyone equally instead of punishing a specific class of people like "the rich".

No sales taxes apply to everyone differently, because they are directly proportional to the % of income spent. Thus someone who is rich and has a very relatively high rate of savings is going to pay a much smaller % of their income in sales taxes then someone living paycheck to paycheck.

Sorry but this is not about income percentages. For example, a movie ticket will cost the same with the new tax (a whopping 63 cents extra assuming 6.75% sales tax rate) whether or not you work for minimum wage, $45k per year or are a millionaire. The same with the other sales tax increases. It is a person's choice on whether or not to buy those items.

Don't forget that Bev Perdue increased sales taxes as well with zero complaints from the Progressives about how it would impact the low income residents of NC.

Yes it is, you said sale tax treats everyone equally. If you have to spend 100% of your paycheck just to get by then you are going to be paying a higher % of your resources in sales tax then someone who only has to spend a % of their income. It is a big tax break for the rich just like everything McCrory and the legislature have done with taxes, which makes sense since they are dancing with the folk that brought them.

Also when are you all going to stop blaming Bev Perdue for everything.

A "tax break" means there is a loophole or credit you can use in order to avoid the tax which is not the case here. You are not required to purchase a movie ticket so the person living paycheck to paycheck isn't impacted by the increase unless they choose to be. You are also forgetting the income tax rates were also lowered so those living paycheck to paycheck will have more money over the long term.

As for Perdue, I would like to see some consistency in the Progressive argument against sales tax increases. So far the argument is Democrat sales tax increases good, Republican sales tax increases bad.

First off I am pretty sure there are sales tax hikes electricity as well so the unless you view having power to cook, have lights, and heat your house as "an option" those folks are going to be impacted. The same is true if they have a car they need to go to work since auto repair taxes are going up as well. Not to mention they eliminated the school supplies tax holiday, which again is not exactly an "optional" expense for most people with children.

Furthermore, lets not lie, folks living paycheck to paycheck probably aren't paying all that much in income taxes and if they are then their taxes are probably arent going down that because the rate was fixed at 5.8% which is about what they paid before.

As to the democrats they did want keep a temporary .25% sales tax for about a year due to the recession causing a budget shortfall which the Republicans haven't really fixed. That is true, however they didn't restructure the tax code to place a permanent burden that makes it harder for working North Carolinians to heat their homes, fix their cars, and by their children pencils for school.

As I said the winners are the wealthy which is not surprising because the GOP in the legislature knows where their campaign money comes from.
