A good part of it was all those farmers who were so proud of how well and far they could plow in straight rows. That was what finally convinced farmers to use contour plowing, it made the best use of what rain fell, rather than letting it run off instead of soaking in. there were a lot of other things too, that all combined made a rich prairie into something else entirely.

For a "bible belt" state, Oklahoman's are the rudest drivers I've ever seen. You would not know you were in a "christian" place the way people tailgate at 80mph.
Are there any nice Oklahoman's? I have seen very few. I came here to get a graduate degree at one of your major colleges...the school is filthy. I make my students clean the classrooms before we begin. No one smiles or says hi to you on campus, no one is friendly in the stores, very few people will talk to you. There is so much classism here it is embarrassing, yet people here LOVE the flag and America, but do not live it....ever.
I can't wait to leave here....I can understand why Oklahoma has the reputation it has. I use to be very much against stereotypes---until I came here. There is a reason why people think the way they do about Oklahoma...and it is because of the way people are here!
Be friendly! to everyone! Stop being Racist! Rich people are NOT better! (they are usually worse, selfish, nasty, arrogant) Brush your teeth! and they wont fall out! Pick up after yourselves! garbage is NOT cool! There is so much crime here it scares me! Cops do not believe in "service" here, just macho bullying (and I am from a Law Enforcement family...where I am from half the cops here would lose thier jobs). Stop trying to control people! Is that freedom??? Some of your laws here are so ridiculous that it is embarrassing.....no porno shops here, but Okla is in the top 10 for child molestation, is number one for animal cruelty, etc. Build some sidewalks!
I could go on for days about what is wrong here.....but to balance it...the good things about okla--the storms (totally awesome) and when it is green it is beautiful. That's about it.

I, for one would like to apologize because I believe you are mostly right. I've been an Okie all my life and I have visited many other states also. I will not drive in busy cities because most drivers are so rude and inconsiderate of other drivers. My husband or children does all that driving, as you might guess I am from a small town and I love living in this small town. Many have said, "how does being a Christian have anything to do with how one drives?" I feel it should have everything to do with how one drives, or how one behaves in Wal-Mart when all the asles are so full you can't maneuver your cart thru them. There are always those that believe they have every right to run you over and sneer at you as they do it. It seems people seldom extend a helping hand these days, and it seems all generations suffer from this "rudeness" disease.
I agree there seems to be a lot of trash out and about, I am constantly picking up Wal-Mart bags that have been left clinging to trees and shrubs after the wind has had it's way with them. But not every Okie leaves their trash just lying about or throws it out their car window while they drive down the highways.
At any rate, I do hope if we should pass each other someday, that I do smile and say, "hello"...I do try to greet and smile at everyone I come in contact with.
May you have a blessed and beautiful day....

Excellent post, rainfields. In rural Oklahoma, waving is pretty much the norm, and politeness is excercised regularly, even in wally world.

Wyllow61 Where are your from? You sure have a high opinion of yourself and your ideas. If you don't like us Okies it's because you have not met us yet. The people you meet in college are mostly out of state students like yourself. Okies know that you came here for our excellant education system and our low tution paid for by Oklahoma taxpayers. You wonder why we don't smile. It could be because we work 14 hours a day for low pay jobs and pay taxes to educate people like you. You do not appreciate the educational advantage you have been given by the taxpayers of Oklahoma. I did not read one word of thanks to the taxpayers for your education.

If you don't love us then leave us
Wyllow61,
If you don't like us Okies then you are invited to leave. We won't keep you here against your will. Unlesss you are American indian you are a visitor here in Oklahoma. Half the Native Americans are visitors here also. Forced here by the federal government on the Trail of Tears. The non Native Americans came here in the land run of 1889 or the oil boom of the early 1900's looking to build a new life. We have all worked together to make Oklahoma a state to be proud of. If you don't want to be part of our little corner of heaven then we won't stop you from leaving.
This message is brought to you by a proud third generation Okie.
