Today's Question(s):

Do you have a set day for grocery shopping ? Yes, sort of. Still training on this "House Husband" job, Tuesdays through Thursdays before High Noon seem to be the least stressful days.

When you were growing up did your Mom have a set day ?

Who uses the same day that Mom did ? N/A

Is your kitchen:

Set up the same way as when you were growing up ?

When you are on the "throne" where would you find the toilet paper holder:
On the side, with a spare on a ledge.

In the Guest bath
On the side, with two spares on a ledge.

And the roll in the dispenser shall drape over the top, folds on the corners not needed. I don't care what Ann Landers use to say...

Do you know where to find your
House water main ?
Yes.
Electric breaker panel ? Yes.

Outdoor concert ?
Yes! The first Grateful Dead ~1967.

Recent? ZZ Top, Albuquerque (Journal Pavilion). Yes, I took the picture.

Convention ?
I use to go to a lot of conventions. The most memorable with a fun factor of 8+ or above would have to have been Bogotá, Columbia....

Default So, I've been saying, "Survey says. . ." since 1976? Sheesh.

No set day for grocery shopping.

My shopping for groceries has more to do with when the freshest items arrive in the stores, and which store is having what kind of sale. Since I no longer have to shop for the week, per se, I seem to stock-up on pantry items and staples, and then buy fresh vegetables and meats throughout the week -- as many or as few times as I choose. It's just the two of us in the house now, and I am retired, so my time is sort of my own, within reason.

Growing up, Mom's set day for grocery shopping seemed to be on Saturdays, early.

Looking back, I think she was a fairly clever cookie, as on Saturdays, we girls would much prefer to stay home, watch our favorite cartoons and Dick Clark's American Bandstand than traipse around the aisles of the A&P. We couldn't talk her into much, anyway. So, she could shop in peace, and then count on us being at the house when she pulled up at the curb with groceries.

That was sort of fun in that aside from what we knew she'd be bringing into the house, there were always a few surprises, like maybe a different cereal or two, some ice cream, or the makings for fudge or brownies, or some other treat. Unpacking the bags was sort of like Christmas or something.Occasionally, there was THE disappointment. . . "What, NO Cap'n Crunch? Fruit Loops? MOM, we haven't eaten Fruit Loops since we were, what? Five?" Or have I confused that with last week?

Saturdays were generally my shopping day, as much as I hated it.

Sure wasn't what I wanted to be doing on one of my days away from the classroom. As Rdslots JR got a little older, I found I could pick things up during the week, so I didn't always have to sacrifice the better part of a Saturday going to the grocer's. By the time she was in HS, between sports and whatever else she was doing at the time, it seemed liked we grabbed a lot of meals o-u-t, or on-the-run.

Now, I'm not one to brag, BUT. . . I think I could easily be hired-out as an organizer.

So OCD am I, until I will spend a considerable amount of time to thinking through how I'll be functioning in my kitchen, and I try to place things logically, as to their use, and in an effort to save myself some steps or time, or both. Contrary to what my family thinks, there is method to the madness.

Because my kitchens have gotten a bit smaller over the years, and cabinet space is sometimes at a premium, I may not do things the same as, say, in a previous kitchen. I can always tell, too, when a kitchen has been designed by the builder, or by someone who didn't cook much; likewise, when the kitchen has been designed by someone who did cook.

Probably, my all-time favorite kitchen was one I was able to re-configure for myself after a major hurricane created a mess of the house, and much had to be redone.

There was no ripping-out walls and remodeling to that extent, but I had been in the house for several years, and had already made mental notes of what would make things flow better, and work. It drove the cabinet installer nuts because he wanted to center the double sink under the windows -- standard, mind you -- but doing that in my small, square kitchen created two dead corners on either side. Just moving the sink let me have a corner cabinet that actually functioned, and was perfect next to the dishwasher, as it became my Tupperware cabinet, so dishes got scraped, rinsed, and went into the dishwasher, with leftovers going into Tupperware and into the fridge.

I also made sure I had plenty of drawers. Drawers are so much handier for a lot of items, like my silverware and utensils, napkins, placemats, tablecloths, and odds 'n ends I enjoyed having on-hand for entertaining. If the slightly off-center sink drove the installer nuts, the fellow who placed the order for cabinets was equally as baffled. This was a small, square kitchen, and I had learned from the previous layout that I didn't have enough storage, and what storage I did have, was not convenient. The look on the fellow's face when I placed an order for (2) 48" pantries was priceless. "Lady," he asked, "how much does your family eat?"

The pantries were actually for my pots and pans, casseroles, Dutch oven, crockpot and other small appliances, and for all of my dishes, and were installed on either side of my fridge -- the one on the left was perfect for cooking items, easily accessible to the stove and oven on a perpendicular wall, and the pantry to the right of the fridge afforded me the luxury of seeing every dish I owned. No more thinking to myself, 'I thought I had a bowl, or platter, or whatever. . ." I could open the two large doors, and see everything. Next to that pantry unit was a pretty glass-front cabinet for my glassware, and counter top that provided just enough space to set items, and the lower cabinet was nothing but drawers, fo silverware, and everything needed to set the table, which in that kitchen, was just a few steps beyond the only work area and real counter top for food prep.
To date, it has been my favorite kitchen. Functioned perfectly for me, how I cook, and entertain.

Toilet paper holders in my house seem to all be mounted on the wall to your left as you sit in the reading room. The paper rolls over the top, by the way. I have to really check myself NOT to change it if I'm in someone else's home. I did mention I was OCD, didn't I?

For some very odd reason, I knew the holders were all mounted to the left.
Storage of extra rolls varies from bathroom to bathroom.

Why yes, I know where the main to the house is, and the water main, and I am capable of shutting-off water and power to the house.
We did have to buy one of those odd tools for turning-off the water this past year. Found an antique one for about $2 at a flea market. Saves having to hunt one down, or call the city, if we need to turn the water off for some reason. Last time it was because the irrigation system had a drip, and we needed to turn it off manually until we got someone to fix it. Just a drip here can add up quickly on the water assessment and bill.

About the only stupid thing I caught myself doing, as an adult, was when I chose to hang some wallpaper in one of the baths. So, there I am on the counter, taking down the large mirror, pocketing the clips and screws for later, and I look at the light fixtures, and think, 'Well, it'd be easier to take those down, too,' and darned if I didn't start to unscrew them from the wall when a little voice says, "What's WRONG with this picture?"

Default Not to horn in, but there's been NO bee in my bonnet

Guess I am odd-man-out. NO bee story. I did, however, have a bad scare with a roomful of hornets, or wasps.

First house I ever owned had belonged to a lovely retired couple who liked to garden and had a beautiful yard, to show for it. The fellow was a very handy type, who had built a great shed in the back corner of the yard. The shed was comprised of three different rooms, each with a distinct purpose. The first was a general garden storage area, for pots and smaller tools, while the second room had a large window overlooking the yard, and great counter space, and a work top -- perfect for projects, or use as a potting shed, and the third room had been designed to hold more household tools and items needed for repairs, and was well-organized with boxes and jar and large coffee cans full of screws and nails and washers.

Both rooms on the ends had doors, and screen doors. The room in the middle was only accessible via one of the other two, but was also open to the other two -- ie. a door opening, but no real door to close. I was in the room on one end, storing pots I didn't plan to use, making sure I had garden ties and stakes on-hand for the growing season, for most of the morning, and occasionally, I would see out of the corner of my eye, a large wasp. I'd think to myself, 'OK, I don't bother MR Hornet . . . he won't bother me.' I am thinking this is the same, one hornet or wasp. I am also making trips out to the yard to gather things that need to be placed in the shed(s), and I head into the third area, from inside, via the middle section, when a large piece of timber I am planning to stand in the far corner hits something overhead. Craning my neck to see around my wide-brimmed gardening hat, I discover I have just bumped a huge nest of wasps or hornets. And there I am in the room with the most unhappy things.

I very carefully lean the board against the wall, and back out of the room into the middle section, a few of the hornets now paying attention to me, and the larger number of them flying madly around the disturbed nest. I cautiously make my way into the other end room with access to the outdoors, when a few more hornets are paying more careful attention to me, and I make a mad dash for the screen door, fling it open, and fly across the yard to the house, screaming my head off. Home alone, I call a few of my kind, retired neighbors to ask, what-in-the-hell-am-I supposed-do?

I took the easiest, and probably wisest suggestion, and called a professional, and let him deal with them.
