I remember when the gas stations used to give green stamps and prizes (glasses and dishware) to entice you to buy your gas there...they also filled the tank for you , washed your windshield and asked if you wanted them to check the oil. I don't even remember the price of gas back then but it was under a dollar for a gallon.....as teen agers we would scrape together whatever change we had or could find in the seats etc and drive in and ask for 44 cents worth or 62 cents worth .... what ever we could find.
I remember when they gave presents as well. One time I got the coolest puzzle, it was in a can that looked like a gas can, but it was a jar and it was a double sided puzzle one side about Hawaii and one side about Alaska.
I remember, "Halo Everybody Halo, Halo is the Shampoo that glorifies your hair." I remember, "Biz in a bucket does everything!" I remember, "Oxodol--laundry detergent". I remember, "J E L L O Pudding, More food energy than rich fresh milk!"; and who can forget: "You'll wonder where the yellow went, when you brush your teeth with Pepsodent!"
Lawrence Welk. Every Saturday evening at 5:00 on our local PBS station. WAY before cable tv.
Guess what they STILL play every Saturday night at 5:00 on our local PBS station..... yep...Lawrence Welk.
Do you think that fifty years ago, Lawrence would have ever imagined that fifty years later, we would have a device on our desks that would allow us to click a link and see this?
I remember when Raliegh cigarettes had a coupon on the back of the package that you could save them for prizes. I also remember when the tobacco companies used actors impersonating doctors to advertise cigarettes to say they were good for you.
I remember my teacher starting to cry in the middle of the class, when the principle said over the intercom speaker in each classroom. President Kennedy has been shot and is dead. I remember the long funeral procession. I remember getting 15 cents for a allowance and getting a bottle of pop and a candy bar and having chance. I remember gasoline costing 29 cents and getting a free glass after the man in the shiney green overalls got done checking, oil, tires, etc. I remember riding my bicycle 11 miles to the real water pool to go swimming! Not wanting to swim in the irrigation ditch for once.
My father smoked Lucky Strike. Once or twice a year he would get sick and it would go into pneumonia. Those were the days a doctor made house calls. He would switch to menthol cigarettes when sick like this Thinking he was doing something to help himself lol.
When we got gas at the gas station I remember my dad saying fill it up with Ethyl.
