I had to learn a " bushel and a peck" Now who knows that today,? Also my service number in 1945 was a letter B and six numbers.

While still in boot camp, new recruits after us had the letter "B" in front of their numbers as the Navy had used up all the numbers and had to devise a new numbering system.
I too was initially issued the 7-digit ID in the Air Force in 1968. I recall the number started with an "AF." Shortly thereafter, they went to SS numbers.

We were called "pings" right out of basic training. Supposedly that was the sound of your hair growing back.

"boots" was the term new recruits out of boot camp were called.

Since us sailors with 7 number digit ID's had a month longer than the new ID's sailors, we stated anyone with the new service ID starting with a "B" was a ..............boot

Drafted into the Navy in 65? I knew people who were drafted into the Marines, in those days, but never met a draftee sailor.

I still remember my USN Service Number.

Yup, drafted into the Navy in 65 and was put into aviation.

I never was on a ship, never spent any time mess cooking or compartment cleaning and never touched a paint brush.

I worked out on the flightline.

I doubt many 2 year draftees got as good a deal as I ended up with.

I remember my 7 digit service number also and use some combination of it for PIN #s even to this day.

I remember Polio (I had it). I remember sitting on my Dad's shoulders on the sidewalk outside the appliance store watching the first TV in town. I remember my mom singing "Mambo Italiano" and my dad dancing with her every time she did, that song is still stuck in my head.
