so i signed up for southwest rewards because they are a chase partner . i can transfer chase points at 1:1 over . but when i price flights on southwest , i logged in but i don't know how to see how many points from southwest it would take so i can compare to chases's portal. all it shows me is dollars .
just found it . there is a button to show in points

Southwest is so cheap out here anyway. I took just 2 “wanna get away” flights cross country and had enough points for a third one. A friend of mine is in sales, and he says the real value is in the companion ticket. I believe if you can accumulate 110,000 points in one calendar year, you get a free companion ticket for the remainder of that year and the next. Not sure if transferred points count though. Keep watching the site though, because they are always offering 50,000 bonus points for the card.

I was looking into that. Right now 60k points for business card and 40k points for personal. Spend another $10k on those cards and you have the companion pass.
Too bad there are no direct flights between LA and NYC.

Yup. And recently they had 2 60,000 cards, which only required 2k spending on each over 3 months. Time the spending to get the bonuses in January, and you’ve got the companion pass for 2018 and 2019. I’m currently working on this.
Now I only have to convince them that German shepherds should qualify as companions..:-)

be careful how you time this . because depending when you get your sapphire card you may not get the 50,000 points posted until the next year . then you blew it if you accumulated 60,000 southwest points

Sorry, wasn’t clear....I got 2 cards from southwest (issued by Chase) but not sapphire. They are constantly advertised on the southwest site. I’m not sure whether these cards count towards the limit of so many cards in so many years, as that was not relevant to me.
The down side of Southwest is that it's all dollar-based redemption, and if you like to be able to arbitrage your frequent flyer stash by using miles/points on last minute or otherwise expensive flights, it doesn't like that in their system.
All of my 5 different mileage redemption flights were "saver fares", but one of the main reasons I got them was that I plan way in advance, almost a year out or basically the earliest I can book a ticket with my miles and I'm pretty flexible.
My best "value" I ever got for my miles redemption was my first one, a ticket from Tucson to LAX to Sydney and back on United over a three week span (Christmas/New Year's, 2006/2007) which only cost me 50,000 miles (now its 60,000 miles) and the ticket price, because it was the peak time in the peak season, would have been at least $2,000 and up, so my rate of return was at least 4 cents.
All of my mileage redemption trips, I got at least 2 cents and up value wise.
how flexible? i just ran a couple of flights and the only way im getting saver is either by not traveling weekends or by having stopovers.

Chase Freedom when the rotating categories matches up.
AmEx Everyday for Gas and groceries
Chase Amazon card for Amazon
I wish the Barclaycard Sallae Mae was still around. That was probably the best card at 5% for Gas, Groceries, and Amazon.
