Was that Miracle Mile? I've never had as good a cornbeef sandwich since...well maybe in NY but I paid $15 for the sandwich and good as it might be it wasn't worth that much.
It seems to me at Park Central Mall, Brothers Hoffbrau had a restaurant (next to Jutenhoops) at the south end of the mall. The restaurant at that end was either Guggy's or Brookshires, and later JCPenney would fill up that entire south strip.

Here is the Sahara, later Ramada being built about 1955. Up and down, that's Phoenix downtown, you would think they could use run down areas for new buildings. I don't know about finding out about condemned properties, lots of times there is an auction for fixtures at first. I recall the Fleming building was torn down before anyone realized it, what a loss that was. This entire block along with three others were once owned by Hattie Mosher who lost the whole thing protesting property taxes. No one helped her. She also owned several buildings on Washington Street. She lived in the basement of an old vacant hotel with one light bulb.
When I was little, my mother and grandmother would talk about Hattie, walking the streets of Phoenix in her dressed to the nines clothes. Everyone knew of Hattie, she was a Phoenix legend.

Later that lot would become the Southern AZ Bank Building which then became the home for Surety Savings and Loan where I worked. Just north of Firestone was a title company. Oh this brings back such memories. Thanks for the photo post.
I have that postcard so I made a better scan. It isn't very sharp because it is a screened lithograph.

The blue building (GB) is the very epitome of "modern" 1960s high-rise architecture. 40 miles south of me in Wichita Falls, TX is a near-replica. Looks cheesy now but as a kid the Central corridor was pretty impressive.

Revco took over the Ryan-Evans Drug Store chain, I believe.

While the list is not absolute, I noticed El Rancho Super Markets missing.

Washington and 4th Ave in 1958.

This is 2nd Street and Washington. I see a Chrysler 300, powerful car but maintenance problems.

We can always count on you.
Im going to to bang my head on the wall now.

Embarrassed Willie.

What was the blue building in the postcard with "GB" as the name. Asked a Xavier grad (school visible in the distance) but she didn't know.
