I was at the Pink Floyd Big Surf concert and it was one of my favorites. Ten Years after was at Big Surf? cool, any memories of that? I remember Stevie Wonder played Big Surf but didn't go. Great that you did! Do you remember any backup bands who played these shows?

I was also at the Star is Born show and remember Graham Central Station opening far to early in the morning with a loud funky bass solo. The LA Jets were a pleasant surprise and Montrose was ...ok...Santana was good and Frampton, well it didn't live up to the live album but we were wearing down by then. It was hot as hell that day and everyone was pissed off at Kris Kristoferson for messing up his lines and the countless "do overs" we had to endure. It was so blazing hot and sitting on the 50 yard line in the stands was nearly unbearable for the 20 or so hours we were there. The crowd and bands and Barbara didn't mix well as she's not a rock performer but everyone was stoned and excited about being in a major movie but the problem was.... and in my opinion, the movie sucked!!!!. but hey, thanks for the memories Barbara!!!

She would prep all the cod, shrimp, and other items, and make their cocktail sauce. When she worked nights, she would occasionally bring home some fish and chips or shrimp and chips. What a treat!
Also on Halloween if you went to Frenchy's pick-up window while trick-or-treating, they would give out little bags of french fries. I loved their long skinny fries!
What a great memory!

Default Random Memories

Phoenix music scene..... Does anyone remember these bands? Memphis a soul sort of Sly and the Family Stone copy. Beans Hard rock. Goose Creek Symphony and a great blues band called New Moan Hay with the great Ponty Bone? I had a short lived band called Peace Inc. usually played up in Papago Park, did some battle of the bands stuff. I remember seeing The Who at Giants Stadium. Dozens of concerts at Celebrity Theatre, Big Surf, Legend City a massive one at Phoenix Coloseum with Big Brother, Poco, Blind Faith and more. Also anyone remember Sanctuary? A good place to hang out and of course if you were flipping out on acid . They had a place downtown I believe around 3rd st. and one in Tempe.

I do remember The Beans who later became The Tubes. Goose Creek of course I remember them too but I show Ten Years After in the Coliseum with Poco, Fridgid Pink, Big Brother, and Cactus on July 31, 1971. The only show with Blind Faith that I can find was at the Coliseum on August 23, 1969 with Delaney & Bonnie. Sound right? I'm going to start a separate post or blog for the music history of Arizona including concerts, venues, and clubs with as many accurate dates as possible. If you know more such as the Big Surf concerts, Summer series concerts at Feyline Fields, Compton Terrace, Arcosanti Festival etc., some of which I've got but quite a few I don't, please let me know!! I'm also interested in the backup bands, ticket stubs, advertisements etc. Thanks for posting Morgan!

Default Shows

I might be mixing two shows up. I remember the Blind Faith concert very well, Ginger Baker did this amazing drum solo that seemed to last forever. And the other you mentioned must be the other because I remember Cactus being there too. One of the first concerts I remember at Celebrity theater (whatever it was called at that time) was I believe in 1969 with BB King and I think Albert King too.

Yes it is Apache Greyhound Park. Spent many a fun evening there watching the puppies run. The back side of the the track butted up against a mobile home park with huge oleander hedges. Someone snuck in and threw a cat onto the track just as the dogs hit the back straightaway. Pure pandemonium for several seconds, but the dogs eventually recovered and instinctively went for the rabbit. A lot of P.O.'d bettors on that one.

The track is still there, but has fallen into disrepair. The building is now a sports bar with OTB. Remember the Black Canyon City track? Been there a couple of times.

Do they still run greyhounds in Phoenix or anywhere in AZ anymore.

I saw Rod Stewart @ Big Surf around that time. I remember not liking the show that much, seemed he was in a hurry to get it over with.
