You don't want to miss a old mining town then Jerome is a must see, the view is worth the ride alone. We have several wineries that spread out in the verde valley, in the spring and summer there are kayaks you can rent and float down the verde river. There is so much to see in the Verde Valley. Hope this helps, I was born and raised in Southern Calif. it took me a while to adjust but im up here and your down there so good luck I hope this helps.
OK, great, but we're talking about things to do in and around Phoenix ... not Sedona, Jerome, or the Verde Valley. Big difference! Usually when people want to know about what there is to see & do in a large city, hiking, kayaking, fishing, nature walks, and things like that don't come to mind. They want to know about museums, live music venues, upscale shopping & dining, pro sports, performing arts, mass transit availability, etc. Phoenix has all these things to a certain extent, but the problem is the image we present to the rest of the nation & world. Many people who haven't been here still think of Phoenix as a mid sized desert resort town with not much to see except cactus, snakes, and rocks.

I mean when it comes to dining out and night life I think phoenix does a damn fine job, we dont have much in the way of museums though.

But yeah people seem to think we are like ABQ or something, most people assume we are smaller than Vegas most of the time and Ive had multiple people be surprised about how many trees we have or how cold it is.

People have bee legitimately surprised that we have a river. Like wtf people what major city on earth can you think of without a river?

Oh yes, forgot about that. Many potential newcomers have this pre conceived notion that scorpions are running loose all over the place, and are infesting everybody's residences. And the rattlesnakes too, oh my! Can't go outside very much because of those deadly rattlesnakes nesting in everybody's yards, and slithering in the streets ready to attack! Don't leave out the dangers of all the flying insects, lizards, spiders, and giant cockroaches either. That's what Phoenix is all about: the scathing scorpions, the roving rattlers, and the leaping lizards. We ain't got no high class culture or nuttin' to do. We're too busy huntin' scorpions, and catchin' them snakes.

Agreed, especially the part about people being surprised that Phoenix's population is more than twice the size of Las Vegas. Vegas draws in a lot more visitors because it's internationally known for gambling, nightlife, and entertainment ... so right away, people assume Vegas is big like New York or L.A. The problem is the image we present. Vegas promotes itself as an exciting destination, but Phoenix still promotes desert images for the main attractions. The reality is there are plenty of amenities here ... probably just as many as other cities our size. What's lacking is a tall, bustling central core, but that's another topic.

Those kind of people are like aliens discovering Earth for the first time and have never seen plants in their life.
