Default More peacefulness in Uniontown

Gunshots fired into Uniontown bar; man found cut on ground
By Tribune-Review
Friday, December 9, 2011

Police in Uniontown are investigating an incident during which someone apparently fired shots into a bar.

According to a police report, an officer was patrolling the Pershing Court housing complex at 2:14 a.m. Thursday when he heard gunshots coming from the intersection of Searight Avenue and Dunlap Street, near J&B Bar and Grill.

A man who had a cut above his left eye, Zachary Davis, 30, of Uniontown, was found lying on the ground outside the bar. He told police he would go to the hospital on his own, but officers learned later that he never went, according to the report.

Police said a crowd of people outside the bar refused to talk to officers. After the crowd left the area, police discovered a bullet hole in the bar's front door. A 9 mm slug was recovered from a carpet inside the bar, according to the report.

In addition, police found a bullet lodged in a tree outside a nearby restaurant. A total of eight spent 9 mm shell casings were found on Dunlap Street near Searight. Police said a 9 mm handgun was recovered from a nearby alley.

Uniontown has this wonderful French restaurant. Absolutely authentic, kept by a French couple. Well worth paying a visit.

This restaurant is Chez Gerard, which is located in a 221 year old house along the National Pike (Route 40) in Hopwood, which is located at the foot of the Summit mountain just outside of Uniontown.

Chez Gerard - Fine French Restaurant

Those are nice photos of Uniontown! I am guessing the architect who designed the Allegheny County Countrhouse also designed the one for Fayette becuase they look surprisingly similar.

Henry Hobson Richardson designed the Allegheny County Courthouse and Jail. It is possible he also designed the courthouse in Uniontown, but by no means necessary--his design may be one of those most ripped-off designs in the history of government buildings.

In fact, here is the Minneapolis City Hall and Hennepin County Courthouse:

It may look SLIGHTLY familiar.

People often assume the black side of town is extremely violent. Now, it's a poor place and there is crime, but it's not like Boyz N' Tha Hood or something. There aren't drive by shootings, kidnappings, rapes, and murders on a constant basis. The stats were listed and, by the numbers, it's not a violent place. I just think a lot of people from that area are intimidated by it because it's the black side of a small town, so everyone is told from birth to stay away from there. Again, the stats show otherwise. But, it's all relative. People that say they won't walk down Gallatin Ave because of the hookers often wouldn't think twice about walking down Liberty Ave in Pittsburgh after dark...and I know 10000% for a fact that hookers walk Liberty Ave, from the 7-11 store down towards the Convention Center area and Greyhound station.

I wish all of PA's downtowns were this nice. There are many boutique stores, as well as a restored historic movie theater, urban parks, a gorgeous restored Richardsonian courthouse and jail (much like Allegheny County's), and a downtown with lots of well-dressed professionals walking around (it was 4pm when I visited). There is a great-looking, upscale new restaurant across the street from the theater. I've always heard that Uniontown was a dead, crime-ridden, place full of rednecks. This couldn't be any further from the truth, from what I saw walking around and exploring the city yesterday. The downtown was vibrant, with few vacant store fronts. It reminded me of Greensburg. I checked the crime statistics and Uniontown has a fairly low crime rate. I think it's just unbelievable how the perception of this town is so different from the reality, and I encourage those who have never been there to visit. It was a fun day trip. They also have passenger rail excursions for tourists!

Yes everyone needs to run to Uniontown for a visit! Don't worry, no one has been murdered since 2002. You'll be perfectly ok as long as you visit at 4pm, take a couple of pics, and leave town immediately. Be sure not to stray to far away from the cute little restaurant or theater though - bad things might happen to people who have been told about this "nice little city". And considering I grew up less than a mile away from this incident below, and then delivered pizza in and around the Hill District later in life, I might just know what I'm talking about :

If you grew up less than a mile from Pershing Court, then you must know that you grew up in the absolute worst area of Uniontown. Surely, you must know that there is more to Uniontown than the rat-infested dump called East End, right? If that's all you've ever known of Uniontown, then I kind of feel sorry for you. Obviously, you had a very poor childhood.

Obviously you can't compare apples to oranges, but isolated small towns sometimes have more than their fair share of crime and poverty (eg Coatesville outside Philadelphia).
