If you tip all the time, your rating is probably fabulous.
Here is how you can check what your rating is, if you're interested.
Open the uber app, on the upper left side you click for a drop down menu, click on "help", click on "account" and then select "I'd like to know my rating" and you can see your rating there.

You can check your rating, go to your profile on the app, go to Help > Account > I'd like to know my rating > Submit.

I don't tip (never have cash on me) & have a 4.9

4.9 stars on 24 trips.

What is your rating, osirus?

I've never used them...what is the passenger rating used for? Can drivers choose not to pick someone up with a bad rating?

Sounds like a system a bit open to discrimination?

As a rider, I have a 4.0 rating after taking 2 trips- one in Florida and one in California. The trips went without any issues but I did not have cash to tip. I have not used uber in Pittsburgh as a rider.
As a driver, I have done 96 trips and I was tipped one time, $3 in cash. I rate everyone a 5.0 unless they vomit or were a complete and utter jagoff. As a driver, I personally do not expect a tip, but it is a nice gesture when someone thinks to do so.

Yes drivers can choose not to pick you up if you have a bad rating or for any reason at all, but this affects their acceptance rating. The acceptance rating can affect your "guaranteed hourly rate" and I suppose if its bad enough you can be deactivated altogether.

It doesn't. The delivery fee is expensive, and there's a service charge atop that, too. Wheel Deliver charges a base delivery fee of $5.75 or $6.75, depending upon what part of town you live in, and the driver only sees $3 of that. If you stiff your driver with them, then they just made a whopping $3 for what could be 30-45 minutes of work.

I know the next response will be one of "if workers aren't happy, then they should take it up with their employer; it is not my responsibility to make sure these workers can afford to eat". Do you feel the same way about tipping servers at restaurants knowing they, like we on-demand drivers, are also paid a base that is below minimum wage while OUR employers have no legal obligations to make sure we make the minimum wage, as restaurants do?

In addition, do you realize we Postmates, Uber, Lyft, etc. drivers pay much higher taxes due to a loophole that classifies us incorrectly as "independent contractors" so that the quasi-employers don't have to pay their half into FICA?
Regardless of the extraneous drivel, if a service outwardly advertises that tipping is unnecessary, I'm not going to tip. It is out of my control whether of not the employee is receiving a fair wage. The standard for restaurants has always been to tip so I will in that case. In regards to PostMates, etc., I would never pay for something that I could do myself, but if if it apparent that tipping is expected then I will do so.

As far as the contractor issue, this is very nuanced law and could really go either way. Uber drivers make their own hours and use their own equipment. They can also deduct business expenses to lower their liability. It really isn't as cut and dry as you think and they could even get fewer benefit if they were employees.

I've never not tipped any driver for a service no matter what it's for. Whether Uber says it's unnecessary or not, you tip the person. That's just common courtesy.

I thought if a driver or a rider rates 3 stars or below, they will never be matched with the same driver/rider again?

That would be good for me. Some cars have so much air freshener in them, I never want to ride in them again.
