But for those interested in an intelligent conversation, I actually thought HE looked a little scared when he said that.
The fact stands that the decision to continue or not with the mosque should not in any way be based on what terrorists might or might not do. Didn't we just have this same argument a few years ago over whether or not to build the new One WTC? Deja vu all over again.
There's no hard and fast agreement amongst Muslims as to what Sharia law includes.
I've seen people on here who seem to believe that Sharia law means women in burqas and public beheadings for minor infractions. Yes, that is ignorant, but ignorance is far more widespread than you might think.
And that is the problem. Muslims in Western countries shouldn't even think about Sharia, they don't need Sharia, they have sane and sensible laws to live under.
The first thing Muslims must do is stop threatening to kill those Muslims who would prefer to convert to more tolerant and sensible religions. They must adapt and allow freedom of religion.
You gotta love how the Christian Taliban responded to this thread and turned the word "anger" into "terrorism" Talk about manipulating one's words to make them a target of Right Wing extremism.
Sorry but I'm a realist. Politics is a part of the world we live in. We declare ourselves to be a country of religious freedom. Legally, they have the right to build a mosque there. That's America. You don't have to like it but you have to respect their right to build a mosque there. The Muslim world is paying attention and seeing if we are a bunch of hypocrites. It has nothing to do with threatening violence or terrorism if we don't do what they say. That's just the wing nuts exploiting this to suit their agenda of generating anti-Islamic feelings. Sorry but those of us with a brain and can think for ourselves will not allow ourselves to be manipulated. I'm a Conservative but I'm not a member of the Christian Taliban. And yes, the Islamic community needs to do a better job of calling out violent fundamentalists in their community. However, there are idiots on both sides of the spectrum. You are seeing one side in the responses above.
You say your a realist, then you realize that even though the Muslim's call the building they are planning in NYC, a "mosque", everyone knows that there is more of an underlining purpose for this building.
The Muslim's plan is to have Sharia Law in every country on this earth. They are using "our freedom of religion" against us. And once "we" cave in to this issue, then the "keys of the kingdom" will be open to them.

Not only is Sharia Law a vicious anti-female code which orders death by stoning, promotes child marriage, decriminalizes abuse of women, and gives wives no rights in divorce, but it also explicitly recognizes the duty of all Muslims to wage Jihad against non-believers and promotes violence to achieve its goals. In this respect, violent Jihad is as inherent in Sharia Law as revolution is in Communist doctrine.
A recent study by Frank Gaffney’s Center for Security Policy, found that 80% of the mosque's in the United States are filled with violent literature, Sharia teachings, and promotion of Jihad and its inevitable concomitant — terrorism.
"Aslan isn't even concerned that some readers will see through his game and view him with greater suspicion and reserve once they do, because even that he will turn around to his own advantage in that parlor game ever-popular among Muslims in America, The Quest for Privileged Victim Status.
"I can't imagine how the next generation of American Muslim youth will react to such provocations. I pray that we never find out."
Threat noted, Mr. Aslan. But instead of tossing veiled threats onto the cappuccino-stained pages of National Public Radio, shouldn't you, sterling moderate that you are, be working among those young Muslims to counter their tendencies to "radicalization"?"

That's the right-wing narrative, yes. Not everybody knows that narrative to be true.

Islam and shari'a are no existential threat to us. Islam is absolutely an imperialistic religion religion, just as its parent religion Christianity is. We can look at the globe today and see that reality has a way of sorting these things out.
The only thing stupider than believing that Islam and shari'a are a serious threat to us is believing that to fight them we must become more like them.

It is religious law, not civil law, although in a few countries on this planet they are one and the same and further influenced by the culture of those countries. When Osama Bin Laden was booted out of Saudi Arabia, he said that Afghanistan was the only true Muslim country. I think there are plenty of Muslims who would disagree with that. At any rate, Muslims in the United States are subject to our civil laws. There is no question about that.
As to the fundamentalist extremists who threaten others, no matter who those others may be, if you have a viable solution to getting them to stop doing that I'm sure a lot of people would like to hear it.
Orthodox Jews have their 613 laws, right? And yet they manage to live here and survive by following both.
