The 1,200-member Followers of Christ church rejects modern medicine for the treatment of illnesses and disease. Instead, the church teaches members to rely on faith-healing rituals such as the laying on of hands, anointing with oil, prayer and fasting.
The church is no stranger to media attention. Members of the congregation have made a habit of watching their children die rather than seek medical attention.
Last February Jeffrey and Marci Beagley were found guilty for the criminally negligent homicide of their 16-year-old son, Neil. Instead of seeking medical attention for an easily treatable condition, the Beagley's chose prayer, with tragic and fatal consequence for their son.
One couple punishes a misbehaving child by withholding food, and she dies. They go to prison for murder. Another couple withholds medical treatment from their child and she dies. The wife gets off scot-free, and the husband goes to jail (not prison) for just sixty days. Why no prison? Because they're Christians.
Was it lack of intent? No, in fact, the parents, Carl and Raylene Worthington, knew exactly what they were doing, and did it deliberately.
Were they ignorant? No, in fact the Christ Church to which they belong has a long history of children dying from medical neglect. Christ Church is such a problem that the Oregon Legislature has passed laws specifically aimed at the church's practices. The Worthingtons knew their daughter might die from their neglect.
Their infant daughter, Alayna, has a serious eye problem, which they chose not to treat. Someone notified authorities and the state intervened, and now the Wylands are trying to regain custody of their daughter.
Yeah Christians are "doing pretty good" all right.

DALLAS (AP) - An international movement of Roman Catholic priests out of countries where they have been accused of abusing children has continued even after the abuse scandal that swept the U.S. church in 2002, the Dallas Morning News found in a year-long investigation. Hundreds of priests accused of abuse have been moved from country to country, allowing them to start new lives in unsuspecting communities and continue working in church ministries, the newspaper reported in Sunday editions.
The priests lead parishes, teach and continue to work in settings that bring them into contact with children despite church claims to the contrary, the newspaper said.

You can take Hitler off that list. He was a member of the flock. Don't want to claim him? That's too bad but he was a Catholic.
Placing Hitler as an atheist is wrong, but saying something strongly about him being Catholic doesn't make it a fact either.
Hitler organized the Protestant Reich Church, was cohabiting with Eva Braun, and rarely or never attended Mass. That combined with his support of "Positive Christianity" made him basically a heretic. So okay you have a solid case he was a lapsed heretical Catholic, but by some definitions so was Martin Luther.
Don't misunderstand there are plenty of actual dictators who were actually Catholic. And there's several who were atheists. People just pick Hitler to be this that or the other because he's got name recognition those people don't. Although I think Franco (Catholic) and Mao (atheist) are famous enough it really shouldn't be that necessarily to play the Hitler deal.
Chiel in my own growing I came to realize another meaning to 'judge not lest ye be judged'. A world of individuals with free will so much of our judgement subjected to personal bias intrinsic to ourselves as humans, the only point of those judgements is to discern for ourselves what is acceptable and what is unacceptable for personal use. We vote with our feet in our lives exercising our free will.
If you ask the Pope which tradition of Christianity is 'correct' his answer will be? Easy enough to take pot shots at the man when he's the only denomination that has such a visible public profile. Each denomination believes they are correct, each of them have kernels of truth that need to be taken into account, and I think if those hiding out under the catch all blanket of Christendom for nefarious purpose could be scrutinized in earnest.... when you have rebuke coming from the majority of the denominations pointed at another denomination it's a clear sign to me. It's a fuzzy legal question, and the inaction of denominations to address just how many charlatans/ 'false prophets' exist in America... that needs to get solved or real Christians wind up getting punished for non christians.
All that said, not that I'm in any stretch of the imagination a saint, can you recognize me as being in many ways different from those you take issue? Am I able to hear out atheist views fairly without losing my identity as a Christian? How many times have you seen me attack them or come at anyone with intentions of conversion? I accept that my maker brought to this earth gays, atheists, Buddhists et al for a reason, and I truly believe those reasons if we hold ourselves to truthful standards discipline, will ultimately heal humans. Don't allow your anger to cloud your judgment and perpetuate injustice. Point at the behavior you personally reject and allow them to own it. The truth is the first casualty in competing brands of dehumanization (extremism).

Ehm - going by the description of the book, this is about people who claim to be Christian, yet utterly fail to live up to the values of the faith. If the author didn't hold the Christian ethos in high esteem, the title would be nonsensical.
