I guess it will come down to whomever feels like they have the most to lose in the 2012 elections.

What will be interesting to see, is if tomorrow Boehner is able to get enough Republican votes to pass another CR, when the last one was passed they all said they wouldn't vote for another one.

The Dems had PLENTY of time to do it when they were in complete control, yet they did nothing. Now the Repubs are trying to help this country and the dems are not having any of it. This problem is their fault. I would be mad if Boehner backed down. After all, he was put in there to do just this.

Whether or not they are trying to "help" the country is debatable. I agree that the budget reduction should be high, I just don't necessarily like the areas that the Republican party wants to cut. If they would put much more of their cuts toward defense, it would be much more palatable.

Tell the President to stop starting wars and maybe we can actually cut defense. However, to cut defense while fighting three foreign wars is sheer stupidity. Unless, of course, your goal is to get US military personnel killed intentionally. I would not put that past any Democrat.

The military isn't shutting down, but their pay is.

Civilian contractors on the base can also be asked to stay home.

Its not the fact that they won't be working that is bothering local business, its the fact that they won't be spending. They all remember this same thing happened with the last two government shutdowns, the one in December hurt the worst, because it was right before Christmas.

I guess if there is not a large concentration of military employees or federal employees in an area most people don't see the issue with a government shutdown.

Lions and Cheetahs are not the same species. A Standard Poodle and a Rottweiler are the same species, and even though humans have %$@#ed with their DNA to a faretheewell they recognize nookie by smell or something and don't let a little kinky hair ruin a party.

How are the Repubs helping if they are going to cut funding to some things that only the conservatives want to cut? I would be willing to bet if they weren't so stuck on catering to the extreme right, they could have gotten their $61 billion.

Why did the Repubs insist on extending the Bush tax cuts to everyone in Dec and pushed Obama into a corner to get it signed? Noone is talking about that, you can cut until the cows come home but unless you raise taxes it is not going to help. Kinda like paying a minimum payment on a high interest credit card, until you apply some extra money to the principal it is not going to help.

Default Just one person...

I've read all these posts and some I agree with, some I don't. My daughter is in the military. My husband and I live with her and her son. Her rent and truck payment are deducted from her pay. Contrary to what one poster said, she does not live rent-free. She does not get room and board, etc. Sure, she gets to shop at a commissary for military personnel. I don't. For supposedly getting all those things free, we sure have a lot of money going out each month.

She's one person. Multiply that by thousands of military personnel. All of a sudden, rents won't be paid, house payments won't be sent, vehicle payments won't be paid, insurance premiums won't be paid...I find it scary to think about having to call the landlord and ask for extra time to pay the rent. Not to mention the utility companies. I doubt that the city utility companies are going to hold off on sending out bills to the customers just because there isn't money in bank accounts.

Yes, I know... special interest, right? You're darned right I have a special interest. She hasn't done anything to deserve being put in this position except serve her country for almost 20 years and go where she's told to go, no matter the cost to her family. We've been so proud of her military service. Some of you try to make her sound like a leech looking for a path to prosperity.

Yes, we have funds available in savings to see us through. I worry for those that don't. It's called compassion.

My apologies for letting emotion show through. I find this all very upsetting. And I get very, very angry when I see these politicians advocating for the shutdown. Yet their salaries are secured because they're funded out of a DIFFERENT budget? Okay, I need to stop there. That's a topic for another thread I think.

I see it as just the opposite. When pelosi ran the House she pushed through things she wanted, as she should. However She did not do her job and get a budget passed.

Now the House is run by the repubs. They are going to push what they want, as they should.

Don't forget, we are not talking about next years budget. This is the current budget. We have been operating without one for 6 months.

In fact, I don't believe Obama has signed a budget his whole time as President.

In our type of government we go by majority rules.

The dems have had total control and did not do their job by passing a budget. They had their chance and blew it. Now it is the repubs turn.
