I've read all these posts and some I agree with, some I don't. My daughter is in the military. My husband and I live with her and her son. Her rent and truck payment are deducted from her pay. Contrary to what one poster said, she does not live rent-free. She does not get room and board, etc. Sure, she gets to shop at a commissary for military personnel. I don't. For supposedly getting all those things free, we sure have a lot of money going out each month.
She's one person. Multiply that by thousands of military personnel. All of a sudden, rents won't be paid, house payments won't be sent, vehicle payments won't be paid, insurance premiums won't be paid...I find it scary to think about having to call the landlord and ask for extra time to pay the rent. Not to mention the utility companies. I doubt that the city utility companies are going to hold off on sending out bills to the customers just because there isn't money in bank accounts.
Yes, I know... special interest, right? You're darned right I have a special interest. She hasn't done anything to deserve being put in this position except serve her country for almost 20 years and go where she's told to go, no matter the cost to her family. We've been so proud of her military service. Some of you try to make her sound like a leech looking for a path to prosperity.
Yes, we have funds available in savings to see us through. I worry for those that don't. It's called compassion.
My apologies for letting emotion show through. I find this all very upsetting. And I get very, very angry when I see these politicians advocating for the shutdown. Yet their salaries are secured because they're funded out of a DIFFERENT budget? Okay, I need to stop there. That's a topic for another thread I think.
As an informational, looks like the commissaries might be closed this time. Since all of the agencies are keeping everything close to the chest right up until the last minute, it's still undecided but I've been hearing scuttlebutt that it looks like they may close this time. Suggest stocking up now as civilian grocery stores are much more expensive, as I'm sure you know.
Remind me again of the Senate vote record on the FY11 budget bill passed by the House back in February? Oh, that's right, 'ole Harry Reid won't let it come to a vote; hasn't voted on it; has just complained about it. That's certainly leadership there...I would call this the Democrat Shutdown as the Democrats are the ONLY ones that have sat back and done precisely nothing.
