These stats in question couldn't possibly be what they are because those people noted in the stats commit more crimes. Of course not. How silly of me to even bring that up....
Actually, "the people" don't commit more crimes. Some members of those groups that are noted in the stats commit more crimes. I bet if "your" people were overwhelmingly getting harassed by cops, your cavalier tune would change radically.
There's a huge difference between officers walking with women late at night and officers stopping people at random. Most people don't know their rights and the police rely on that. The police can also legally lie to people to try to get information. Remember these five lines:
I don't wish to speak to you. (Legally you don't have to)
Am I being detained?
Am I free to go?
If I'm not free to go why am I being detained? Am I a suspect of a crime?
I do not consent to any search.
if a cop comes up to you and tells you hands up, your going to comply out of fear.
stop and frisk isnt illegal either. all you need is reasonable suspicion. for some cops just being black is reasonable suspicion, which is why you see such high frisk rates for non whites.

Seems to be a cops mindset that if you refuse consent to search, they become suspicious.
If you dont llok like a criminal, you would have nothing to worry about. If you do , well thats the whole point of it. To keep people who do look like criminals from comeing to my town.
The police here do exactly what the taxpayers here want them to do. Keep low lifes from destroying their good quality of life that they have worked hard to get , while going easy on the taxpayers paying their salaries.
That is actualy what most responsable honest hardworking Americans want.
its at the border crossings too by us customs. lots of pat downs at the window and we are not getting on a plane we are crossing and getting on the trolley. some sort of major change occuring. the TSA thing is spreading only i dont see any airplanes.

I'd like to see some detail as to what a "stop & frisk" actually means. The article says that typically, about half of those stopped are patted down. Does that mean the other half are stopped and spoken to? Are they in any way harassed, treated like criminals or suspects, or prevented from walking away & going about their business?
Clearly the police can't be allowed to simply search any random person on a whim, and if that's happening it should be stopped. But do we REALLY have a problem with police officers talking to people on the streets? Making sure people know they are there & doing their jobs? Years ago, when I managed a large call center in one of the boroughs, we ran until the very late hours. I know for a FACT that the women who were walking the three blocks to the train at midnight were very happy to have those police officers stop, say hello, and even walk part of the way with them.
Somehow I don't think that's what they are doing. I doubt they are saying "hello, welcome to NYC. How can I help you?"

It is a blatant violation of the 4th amendment to stop someone because they "look like a criminal".
